• clearly identify the central passage or theme of your paper, 
• articulate and substantiate the question you are asking.
  • Substantiating the question involves presenting the textual details that give rise to the question. For instance, if you are considering an interpretive controversy, in which certain details of the text are read in different ways, then you should present the ambiguous details and explain the differing readings.
• Present some of the main positions interpreters have previously taken on the question/problem, and explain the philosophical or interpretive ramifications of these differing interpretations so that your listeners have a sense of why this is a problem it is important to resolve.
