DETAILS: Develop a staff in-service (roughly 1 hour in length) that addresses some ways that non-ESOL classroom teachers can use effective pedagogical strategies and enhance their cultural awareness/sensitivity. Use current research as the foundation for the recommendations that you make in your in-service.
Part I: Research
Read at least 8 articles on ESOL pedagogy and/or building multi-cultural communities in schools and classrooms. Articles should be from scholarly journals or book chapters published within the past seven years.
Readings should synthesize research studies or focus on effective teaching practices. Use current research as the foundation for the recommendations that you make in your in-service.
Part II: Develop a Research-based Staff In-Service
- Develop an objective and a plan for a staff in-service based on the research you have read in your own studies and from the class texts. Clearly delineate how all of the time in the in-service will be accounted for.
- Develop all handouts and materials for this in-service.
- Develop a culminating activity that assesses the understanding of the group and/or their ability to apply the information you presented to their own classrooms.
