Rutgers University Social Net Benefits Questionnaire

Question Description

I’m working on a social work discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Website for Exercise: Code for America: https://www.codeforamerica.org/features/bringing-social-safety-net-benefits-online/ (Links to an external site.)

This website conveys how complicated it is to apply for safety net benefits in each state. In this website, they map out the application process for five core social safety net programs for children and families: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Medicaid, TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), WIC (Women Infants and Children), and LIHEAP (low income housing energy assistance).

  1. In looking at these programs in several states, what patterns do you see? Which states fare better than others? Why do you think this is?
  2. Browse the websites in 2-3 states for applying to some of these safety net programs (whether they allow online applications or not). Based on your review of these websites and of the Code for America website, what are some of the hurdles and challenges applicants face?
  3. Briefly describe how do the applications processes indicate stigma for the applicants, or reduce the stigma for them?
