These three assignments (CTS, Phillips, and EMIB) are all focused on the dangers of a Growth Bias. You need to use the case data to logically make the case if there is a growth bias. “I think” will not cut it. This is needed for a B grade.

Based on the Phillips Decision Brief and also here please answer the questions facing Jim Fulton. The basic decision is to continue investing in the High End scanners. What are the risks and returns. What other options should Jim Consider given Phillips’s position in the industry? Two pages max.

Grade B: Analyze the market growth and why it may or may not be sustainable. You need to apply the pattern from the CTS case or common sense.

Grade A: The logic behind recommending the market segments (Exhibit 1 and 3) that are a best fit for Phillips.

Notice: Phillips and EMI B assignments: Both businesses suffered from WYSIATI syndrome. EMI became bankrupt. It did not have to. In both cases, you need to use case data to show why the business model is suspect and what are the worst decisions they can make. Based on that you need to pivot both in terms of where to play and how to win (focus on different parts of the value chain). If you have internalized the lessons from the previous cases these should not be difficult.
