University of Portland Difference Between Toughness and Ductility Memorandum

Question Description

I’m working on a mechanical engineering discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

writing a memo about the lab we did

The purpose of this memo is to request your help in determining the effects of test temperatureon material toughness and in identifying the underlying cause(s). Thus far, investigations in EGR270 have been limited to room temperature samples. We would like you to expand to a largertemperature range. All the tests conducted thus far (cold-rolling, precipitation hardening, tempering and quenching)have altered the microstructure of the material to change their mechanical properties. Whilethese tests have used varying temperatures to achieve these microstructural changes, data wasonly taken with the samples at room temperature. In this experiment you will be assessingmechanical properties at varying temperatures. Within the given temperature range there are nomicrostructural changes; hence, any property changes you observe must be the result of someother phenomenon. Please conduct Charpy Impact tests to determine the effect of temperature on the toughness offour different alloys (2024-T351, ASTM A36, AISI 1045CF, AISI 1045HR) following ASTM E23 -Standard Test Methods for Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials. Please write a technical memorandum to present your findings. Memos are like letters, but theformat is somewhat different. Please see refer to the posted rubric, the resources listed onMoodle, and the Mechanical Engineering student reference page for details. If you have anyquestions, please do not hesitate to contact any of your lab professors (see syllabus). When presenting your findings, please clarify what the engineering definition of toughness is andhow it differs from ductility. Please provide an explanation for the material behavior you observe, which should indicate a ductile to brittle transition for most metals/alloys. Please also providean explanation of why some alloys may not exhibit a ductile to brittle transition
