You are the head of training for a global healthcare company headquartered in the U.S. with operations in China, India, and Russia. You support the product management division and there is one product manager for each region: U.S., China, India, and Russia.

You have noticed that division product managers in the U.S. have a hard time working on projects that require them to work with other product managers whom are overseas. Much of the collaboration among product managers occur via web-conferencing tools such as Zoom or Skype, email, and an organization’s private network. Some of the issues you have noted have been communication barriers, technology adaption issues, cultural differences, amongst others. All of this is affecting how products are being designed.

The negative outcomes of this scenario are that products are not being delivered on time for production, poor quality and product design, and overall dissatisfaction by customers of the products being used. The head of product engineering has asked that you conduct a needs analysis to determine learning opportunities for each product manager. The outcomes and objectives of the head of product engineering is to improve timeliness of products being delivered for production, increase quality and product design, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction. Use your creativity to address the following:  

  1. Conduct a      needs analysis identifying at least five skill gaps or issues from the      scenario listed above. For example, a skill gap could be the lack of      skill/knowledge of using web conferencing tools to communicate with      international employees. List the skill gap or issue, and then discuss      your rationale as to why you believe this is a skill gap or issue that      contributes to the negative outcomes.
  2. Discuss      the learning opportunities that could be used to close the skills gap or      issues identified. For example, design a short webinar session on how to      use Skype when communicating with overseas employees. Discuss how your      learning solution will help close the gaps and the positive outcomes it      could potentially have in this scenario.
