Purdue University Illuminating the Druggable Discussion

Description

Instructions

Research is expensive, so finding funding sources is a critical piece of the ‘conducting research’ puzzle. Your assignment is to use the Grants.gov website to search for a grant that would fund research in an interest area of your choice. In addition to finding the grant, write up a narrative that provides the following information on the announcement you chose. Your write up must include:

What your interest area is

Funding opportunity number and title

  • Include URLs for the grants.gov announcement and full award information
  • Identify the grant making agency (If NIH, also include which institute)
  • Summarize the purpose of the funding opportunity
  • Provide the posting date, application due date, review dates, earliest start date for funding if awarded, and announcement expiration date (If ‘standard’ date, determine your dates using the funding agency’s tables for the current cycle)
  • Provide how much funding is being offered
  • Provide funding timeline
  • Provide any named contacts including their title and contact info for the announcement
  • Why you chose this grant and how it fits with your interest area.
  • Your grant can come from any grant making agency, but your interest area and purpose of the funding opportunity must be to address a health related issue. So, grants for improved roadways from the Department of Transportation would not be acceptable, but if the Department of Transportation has a grant for research into reducing drunk driving fatalities, that would be acceptable.

University of California San Diego Contact Tracing Discussion and Responses

Description

Last week we read about outbreak investigation, which is one of my favorite topics. If you’ve been paying attention to the news about COVID-19, you’ve probably heard a lot about one particular outbreak investigation tool, namely contact tracing.

Contact tracing is pretty much what you’d expect from the name: It means tracking down all the people that an infected person came into contact with when they may have been contagious. For a disease like COVID-19 that can be spread before a person is showing symptoms, you’d probably also want to track down all the people those initial contacts came into contact with, as well.

It can be a massive undertaking! When we’re not engaged in social distancing, we come into contact with tons of people every day–often without even knowing who they are (think: people standing in line with you at Starbucks).

For your initial response to this week’s DQ: Find an example of contact tracing being used to control an outbreak other than COVID-19.

Briefly describe the context (e.g., the disease, the location, the population at risk).

How and why contact tracing was used?

What technologies did the health authorities employ (e.g., pen and paper, tablets, cell phone location data) and how was it used?

What challenges would you foresee in applying the same approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how could those challenges be addressed?

FNU Animal-Assisted Therapy Discussion

Description

The animal-assisted therapy is rapidly integrated as a supplemental treatment for physical and cognitive recovery and rehabilitation practices. This approach involves trained animals that assist patients during physical and cognitive exercises and provide emotional support to encourage patients. Despite showing promising results as an extra care service, animal-assisted treatment is an unexplored medical and scientific phenomenon.

Conventional physical therapy encompasses recovery activities to assist patients in regaining physical functions. The animal-assisted therapy suggests that pets support patients by following, cheering, and encouraging them during the rehabilitation process (Fontaine, 2019). Such a practice is widely used in children’s care services to create a psychologically comfortable and secure environment.

Nonetheless, animal-assisted therapy shows little impact on physical recovery. Denzer-Weiler & Hreha (2018) indicates that animals act as a distractor from pain and treatment inconveniences. Clinicians have conducted a trial among patients who underwent physical therapy and determined that patients with animal-assisted therapy showed less alertness and anxiety (Denzer-Weiler & Hreha, 2018). However, these patients still required complete physical treatment to recover from their disease.

From this perspective, animal-assisted therapy shows prominent opportunities in cognitive therapy. Rodrigo-Claverol et al. (2020) concluded that animal-assisted therapy significantly impacts rehabilitation speed among patients with cognitive disorders. Their study confirmed that patients supported by animals showed better results and higher confidence during cognitive assignments and tests completion (Rodrigo-Claverol et al., 2020).

Capella University Root Cause Analysis and Improvement Plan Discussion

Description

use a supplied template to conduct a root-cause analysis. The completed assessment will be a scholarly paper focusing on a quality or safety issue pertaining to medication administration in a health care setting of your choice as well as a safety improvement plan.As patient safety concerns continue to be addressed in the health care settings, nurses can play an active role in implementing safety improvement measures and plans. Often root-cause analyses are conducted and safety improvement plans are created to address sentinel or adverse events such as medication errors, patient falls, wrong-site surgery events, and hospital-acquired infections. Performing a root-cause analysis offers a systematic approach for identifying causes of problems, including process and system-check failures. Once the causes of failures have been determined, a safety improvement plan can be developed to prevent recurrences. The baccalaureate nurse’s role as a leader is to create safety improvement plans as well as disseminate vital information to staff nurses and other health care professionals to protect patients and improve outcomes. As you prepare for this assessment, it would be an excellent choice to complete the Quality and Safety Improvement Plan Knowledge Base activity and to review the various assessment resources, all of which will help you build your knowledge of key concepts and terms related to quality and safety improvement.

Schizophrenia Case Study

Description

Purpose:Analyze and apply critical thinking skills in the psychopathology of mental health patients and provide treatment and health promotion while applying evidence-based research.Scenario:

C.Z. is a 20-year-old Caucasian male who is in his second year of college. He is seeking treatment due to persistent fears that campus security and the local police are tracking and surveilling him. He cites occasional lags in his internet speed as evidence that surveillance devices are interfering with his electronics. His intense anxiety about this has begun getting in the way of his ability to complete schoolwork, and his friends are concerned – he says they have told him, “you’re not making sense.”

C.Z. occasionally laughs abruptly and inappropriately and sometimes stops speaking mid-sentence, looking off in the distance as though he sees or hears something. He expresses concern about electronics in the room (phone, computer) potentially being monitored and asks repeatedly about patient confidentiality, stating that he wants to be sure the police won’t be informed about his treatment. His beliefs are fixed, and if they are challenged, his tone becomes hostile.

Questions:

Remember to answer these questions from your textbooks and NP guidelines. At all times, explain your answers.

Discuss the etiology, course, and the structural/functional abnormalities of schizophrenia.

How would you address this psychopathology when assessing or treating a patient diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia?
