Research three healthcare issues affecting your local community.
? You will contact either a local healthcare agency (i.e., County Health Department, etc.) or healthcare facility (i.e., clinic, hospital, or nursing home) to identify healthcare issues affecting the local community

Criterion 2: Preparing an Advocacy Plan

Includes all 4 of the elements to propose a healthcare advocacy plan:
? Explains the issues facing your community
? possible methods to alleviate the concern
? how you would ethically advocate for the respective population
? research the specific issues presented with credible sources (e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Health, Census Bureau, etc.).

Criterion 3: Writing Requirements

All of the following elements are met:
? Displays college-level writing in Standard English free of spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.
? Minimal in-text citation errors such as a missing page number or a misplaced date may occur.
? Minimal paper formatting errors such as a misplaced margin may occur.
? Quotation marks and citations make authorship clear.
? Assignment is 3-page paper in length not including the title page and reference page.

Criterion 4: Academic references with in-text citations.

Includes three academic references from multiple outside sources and/or course materials as required.

Student work demonstrates the ability to formulate all the components of a healthcare advocacy plan.

Purpose: This assignment provides the student with the opportunity to engage in reflective practice. Reflective practice requires that practitioners examine tacit knowledge and questions that arise within the practitioner during practice. Practitioners who engage in disciplined reflection develop critical thinking skill and refine tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. Development of leadership behaviors is a process that occurs over time through the use of observation, trial and error, experience and the application of leadership theory to circumstances requiring leadership.

Procedure:

1. Students are required to keep a Journal that reflects your thoughts and observations about

the leadership, management and followership that you observe in your clinical rotations,

read about in your weekly readings or reflect upon in the observations that you make about

leaders in the public eye. All students are required to make a minimum of 4 journal entries

throughout the semester

Create a PowerPoint presentation examining the law in Saudi Arabia pertaining to litigation of physicians and healthcare organizations as shown in the Ministry of Health Law of practicing health professions (2005, December 6).  Be sure to include:

• An analysis of the purpose of the law;
• The ethical principles guiding this litigation;
• The definition of “tort reform”
• Discussion about how evidence-based care can lower the risk of litigation
• Recommendations that would improve the law to further meet the goals of its purpose.

Visit a local farmers’ market to engage in a nutrition-related activity within the local community.  The market that is recommended for this assignment is the Forsyth Farmers’ Market (FFM) in downtown Savannah if you live in this area, but any Farmers’ Market can be used.  The Forsyth Farmers’ Market is a weekly event that occurs on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 1:00 pm in Forsyth Park.  Use the following resource to prepare for your visit and to check the schedule:  http://forsythfarmersmarket.com   Other local/mobile farmers’ markets are acceptable if the student is unable to attend the FFM.

During the visit, make notes about your experience, including what you see, do, and taste.  Capture any engaging conversations you may have with farmers or customers.  You may include photos, flyers, drawings, etc., as supplemental content. 

Address the following topics:

1.  Include the Farmer’s Market Contact Information and Schedule – name of market, contact information, web site information, full address, market schedule

2.  Description of the vendors, the produce/other items, the customers, the setting, and any other details observed

3.  Reflection of the nutritional and public health value/benefits of community events like this and what food access means to you

4.  List at least three ways that local communities can support healthy nutrition

5.  Overall reflection of Farmers’ Markets
