HRMN 408 University of Maryland Global Campus Week 5 Job Situation Memo

Description

Discussion Topic #1 — FMLA

Joe has had a difficult life. His parents separated when he was an infant. His mother began drinking heavily to deal with her depression and became alcoholic. Social Services intervened to remove Joe from his mother’s care. Joe’s grandmother took Joe in and raised him from infancy.

Joe is now employed for your company which is situated in California.

His grandmother needs a serious operation on her eyes and will require constant monitoring and help 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Joe asks for 6 weeks unpaid leave from his important job to provide care for his grandmother.

Your boss comes to you – “Are we legally obligated to grant Joe unpaid leave and guarantee him his job?”

Draft a one-page memo to your boss:

1.What are the Federal FMLA eligibility requirements relative to Joe being able to take unpaid leave and have a guaranteed job, to take care of his grandmother?

2.What are the Calif FMLA eligibility requirements relative to Joe being able to take unpaid leave and have a guaranteed job, to take care of his grandmother? Only address differences between Calif FMLA and Fed FMLA, if any, as to the question of Joe being able to leave to take care of his grandmother?

Use a minimum of two HR/legal references to support your conclusions.

Discussion Topic #2 — Employee Termination

Situation – As the HR Director, you have been asked by a supervisor Tommy to provide guidance on an employee that they want to terminate.

Write a memo to the supervisor Tommy to address the following:

1.As the HR professional, discuss the concepts that employees serve “at will,” and can be fired at any time, for any reason that isn’t illegal.

2.The supervisor has indicated there is a situation of poor performance, some attendance problems, and that the employee is just “not working out.” However, the supervisor is concerned that the employee might retaliate by claiming discrimination, since the employee is part of a protected class.

3.What documentation should the supervisor have?

4.What else would you advise the supervisor to be aware of?

Use a minimum of two HR/legal references to support your conclusions. You must substantively respond to two colleagues.

Here are two references for you to consider:

The Artificial Intelligence and The Concept of Consciousness Analysis

Description

One of  our major objectives this semester is to apply the theories we’ve been  discussing and our own ethical thinking to issues in engineering  practice. For your final assignment, you will be doing exactly that.  Building on materials that you have already submitted earlier in the  semester (your identification of an ethical issue in your field and  explanation of what makes a centrally ethical issues, as well as your  earlier introduction and argument outline), you will submit a first  draft of a final paper in which you do the following:

  1. Introduce your topic,  explaining in language accessible to the educated layperson, what is  involved—i.e., what you are talking about, what the issue is, what  practice or technology or process is under discussion—at the technical  level and what makes it a matter of ethical concern—here you might want  to distinguish it from merely legal or customary or social  concerns—including why your reader should be concerned;
  2. Choose and identify at  least two perspectives—these can be from ethicists, engineers, or  theorists we have discussed or they can be from any other professionals  who have views bearing on your topic—and, for each of them, lay out the  general picture of their view, making clear how they distinguish between  right and wrong actions or good and bad people or good and bad design  or practice—for this, you should cite your sources (APA, MLA, Vancouver,  and Chicago are all acceptable formats);
  3. For each of the  perspectives you have chosen, explain how you believe they would apply  to your chosen topic—here you should explain how the general picture you  have provided works in the specific case you are discussing—argue from  their views to their application;
  4. For each of these perspectives, analyze their answers, telling your reader what you think they got right and wrong and why;
  5. Explain what you  believe the correct approach to your topic is—what we ought to do, how  we ought to limit or expand the practice, etc.—and defend your view—you  should do your best to convince your educated lay reader of the  correctness of your view, starting from reasonable premises about the  rightness or wrongness of action to your conclusion; and,
  6. Finally, conclude,  summing up your argument and view and comparing and contrasting it to  the other views you have considered, highlighting your and their  strengths and weaknesses.

Auburn University Film Dont Look up Essay

Question Description

I’m working on a film discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Choose a film to be the subject of your essay. There are no constraints to your film choice other than it should be class appropriate (if you are unclear as to what this means, please contact me). Watch the entire film, preferably taking notes to aid in your analysis. You may need to watch the film more than once (or at least repeatedly study a few scenes) to complete this assignment. If you are having difficulty choosing a film or have any questions about the appropriateness of your choice, email me and I will help you make the best decision for the assignment.

Review the four film conventions covered in class (sound, camera, color, and narrative) and choose at least two to analyze in the film. Review your film notes and possibly re-watch some scenes to properly analyze the conventions. Your convention analysis should answer the following questions:

How is this convention used in the film?

How does the use of the convention help with the storytelling?

Is the use of the convention effective? (Example: How does the sound (music, etc.) impact your experience watching the film? Does it effectively add to the story or aid in communicating a theme, emotion, setting, etc.?)

Write your essay. DO NOT refer to any outside resources other than your textbook, class notes and PowerPoint, and your chosen film (you may also visit the Academic Success Center to meet with a tutor). Consulting outside sources can lead to plagiarism and/or confusion. If you quote the film or use texts outside of the class textbook, you will need to include citations. As you write, remember that this essay is NOT simply a summary. Though you may briefly summarize the film, particularly scenes on which you are focusing, the bulk of your paper should demonstrate critical thinking and analysis. Considering the following questions may assist you with approaching film analytically:

  • What is the general message/moral/resolution/lesson of the movie, if any?
  • Is the movie attempting to make any statements about other works, society, specific people, etc.?
  • How does the sound/camera/color/narrative serve the movie? Does it move the plot along, give the audience information, or provide critique? How does it influence your experience as the viewer?

Cuyamaca College The Dawn Blog Post

Description

Blog posts must be a minimum of 1200 words and include at least one image, either one you have created or one you have found. Blog Posts should be Word Documents double spaced in 11- or 12-point font. You should include a title that is different from your text’s title. Also, please put your name at the top of the first page. CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Create a four-panel comic focusing on a significant sequence of images, ideas, or events in Butler’s Dawn. You can either draw it by hand or use digital tools. Then, write at least 1200 words about your process of creating the comic in relation to the novel. Why did you choose to focus on what you did? What meanings in the story were you trying to highlight? How did the choices you made about what to represent in the comic connect to those meanings? Analyze specific details or short quotes from the novel in relation to your comic, using examples to flesh out your discussion of what’s important in the novel. Take a photo or a screen shot of the comic and upload the file as an attachment.
  2. Rewrite one of the key scenes in Dawn from an alien point of view. Based on what you have learned about the Oankali over the course of the novel, construct a plausible scene of 1200 words or more filtered though an alien POV. as a way of illuminating Butler’s imaginings of aliens as well as her estranging of human norms.
  3. If you were an historian from the future trying to understand what Afrofuturism was in the 1980s and 1990s, how would you explain it using at least two quotes, details, or scenes from The Last Angel of History and three sentences, passages, details, or scenes from Butler’s novel Dawn? What connections can you see between the two texts? What ideas from this 1995 moment the documentary represents help us understand Dawn? Are there elements of Dawn that connect to aspects of the film that either help us understand the film better or that complicate or expand upon ideas in the film? You need not answer all these questions but make sure you come up with a logic that connects the two texts in multiple ways in your Blog Post.

ASU Interdisciplinary Theory and Methodology Paper

Description

  • THE QUESTION: Put Repko, and Menken & Keestra, to work for you. Explain how you have applied interdisciplinary theory and process to your thinking in your Literature Review. Our readings are about the interdisciplinary research process, and since you are doing research in an interdisciplinary core course, we’d like to see you thinking about how your research is more than/different from traditional, disciplinary research. Since you have not yet completed the process, I would not expect you to have an answer that completely explains how you have implemented techniques of integration in your work. Nor would I expect you to discuss all of the interdisciplinary theory that is discussed in the readings by Repko, and by Menken & Keestra. However, in about three pages you should be able to make a convincing statement that explains how your work is interdisciplinary, drawing on the important details available in the assigned chapters from the books by Repko, and by Menken & Keestra. To do well, your essay must speak both to your paper topic and to the readings. Be specific. Refer specifically to the dimensions of your issue: the arguments (“disciplinary insights”), concepts, theories, and so on that you are thinking about as you research. Refer specifically to the content of the books. Do not quote from them, but do provide citations. For example, if you wanted to point out that your research relies on your understanding of the disciplinary perspectives evident in your topic, you might say: My thinking about nuclear nonproliferation depended upon my understanding of the perspectives (97-100) of the disciplines Communication and Political Science. The (97-100) refers to pages 97-100 of Repko’s book, which begins a discussion of disciplinary perspective. (Be sure to cite and reference the books, not the course pack.  There are readings from three different books here, so be clear about your sources!) This is just an example. It is possible to make more than one reference in a single sentence — compound/complex sentences are a good thing. There’s plenty to say in this essay (because Repko, and Menken & Keestra, have a lot to say, and because your paper should be packed with content), and being concise, clear, and well organized is very important.

Richland Community College John Kennedy American Liberalism Discussion

Description

John F. Kennedy’s presidency is seen as lost potential and a modern-day Camelot. Is that a fair assessment, considering his accomplishments, mistakes, and policies, or is JFK’s legacy overblown? Why? (300 words)

Remember to respond to two (2) other classmates. Let’s have a lively discussion! (100 words each)

Rudy

I believe that the loss of president Kennedy is a loss of potential for America. While JFK did not do a lot of political work, he was still yound and attempting to change a lot of things around for america such as the development of the space program and domestic as well as international affairs. Im sure that president kennedy would have been able to come up with some wonderful ideas to help america grow and achive greater things then what we have achived already. I feel that President Kennedy’s entire term was nothing but a “what if” type of situation, where most people wonder what whould have been if he never got assasinated.

ZakariaJ

FK was a youthful, compelling, and charismatic leader compared to many of the men who held the oval office until his inauguration. Some of the initiatives undertaken during his presidency included the Peace Corps, foreign assistance to developing countries, and additional resources for the space program. He called for “real peace” between the USA and the Soviet Union in another speech. This speech was warmly received by the Russian leader.

No, I don’t see his legacy as overblown since he saved the world by preventing a nuclear holocaust in 1962.

Nevertheless, in his short presidency, JFK failed to obtain the passage of any significant civil rights legislation. He failed to obtain passage of legislation to fight poverty on a grand scale. The most egregious failing of Kennedy’s presidency would have to be his failure to back Cuban rebels who attempted to destroy Castro’s rule during the Bay of Pigs invasion. The failure of the CIA operation, as a result of Kennedy’s failure to offer air assistance, resulted in a loss of American prestige and enhanced Castro’s position as a leader of the people who stood up to American aggression.

JFK’s presidency has a very mixed record. Perhaps, if JFK had been in office longer, he would have accomplished much more. It is hard to know.

isolation from each other. I want to see that you recognize how different
social problems are related and intersect. You should also try to synthesize
your sources into a coherent argument, meaning that I do not want a paper
of individual article summaries. The papers receiving the highest grades

Norfolk State University Child Labor Policy Analysis

Description

The purpose of writing a policy analysis is to 1) demonstrate a proficiency in basic writing skills, 2) demonstrate an understanding of a state or congressional policy, 3) correlate the policy (statute law) and procedures with wider societal social policy issues and lastly, 4) demonstrate the skill of advocacy in the written form. The paper must reflect theories, terms and concepts discussed in class and in the readings. Choose one of the Grand Challenges to explore in great detail.

Students may conduct research that yields policy information regarding the populations their practicum or affiliated agency serves.  For example, if the student has written briefs from agency policy manuals regarding social work with mental health clients, then this analysis should incorporate policies regarding mental illness.  If a student has focused on policy and juvenile justice court units; the policy analysis should illustrate wider social policy regarding the juvenile justice system.  Or, students may write a policy analysis about a topic area of interest.

           After properly introducing the topic area, the student must provide pertinent and recent policies regarding the social population served. The student must quote verbatim wider social policy and the source and then correlate such policy with agency policy and procedures. Next, the student must demonstrate whether agency policy fulfilled social policy or operated against social policy.  This should be done through highlighting several agency procedures. The next section should discuss the ideology of agency procedures. Are they fair or biased? Are they helpful or hinder? Do they speak to social need and/or social exclusion? Are they Afrocentric? Explain very specifically. Include itemized budgetary needs.

           This final section should address how you would advocate for fair and equitable policies that are conducive for poor people to advance (consider a Grand Challenge population) Therefore, you need to write some specific agency policy statements that would better serve those who are impacted by agency policy.  Your discussion must be persuasive.  This is your moment to exercise your advocacy skills. This is truly your moment to shine. Remember, as you advocate for applicable policies, you should include a funding/budgeted section, and you may include partnerships with other agencies, city units, etc., that will fulfill your goal. Outline your analysis as follows:

Mental Illness Discussion

Description

Instructions: The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop the ideas in your Project Brainstorm and operationalize a program that will serve as the foundation of your grant proposal. For example, if you are interested in the general topic of preventing drug abuse among adolescents, in the program proposal you should start defining the components of a program that would address this issue. Some questions to consider within this example would be: What is the definition of drug abuse? What are the risk and protective factors for drug abuse, and what kinds of programs might reduce risk? How would one measure successful prevention of drug abuse?

The questions below are intended to structure your thought process as you develop your ideas for a program. Please number your responses and use full sentences in your submission. Upload your submission in .docx format to the Assessments section of your course. The recommended length of this assignment is 2-3 pages double spaced (with 1-inch margins and 12-point font). You should provide citations when applicable in APA format along with a References page.

  1. What is the problem or need that your program will address? Why is this important? Provide statistics that will support your response.
  2. What are the primary theories in psychology that are relevant to understanding this problem?
  3. Who is the target consumer for this program? In other words, who will participate in this program?
  4. What is the intended outcome of this program, both in terms of the effect(s) on individual participants, but also effect(s) on other groups such as families, communities, and society more broadly?
  5. What programs already exist that address this topic? Provide at least a list of programs you have researched, even if you haven’t read about all of them yet.
