ASU week 14 Legacies of The Third Great Awakening Today Paper

Description

WEEK 14: What are the legacies of the Third Great Awakening today?

Cartoon: Couch Activism 2 (medium) by urbanmonk tagged politics, occupy, protest, economic, recession, global, financial, crisis

As this cartoon illustrates, the culture of activism and protest runs deep in the culture of the United States, even among those who do participate in activist work. A major feature of the Third Great Awakening was the emergence of these intentionally activist organizations. Arguably, this pattern of religio-social response has roots from the Second Great Awakening in the Abolition movement; but it really bloomed in the Third Great Awakening Period.

Today, activist organizations in the United States of America have grown in number and diversity, and reach into every area of daily life: social, economic, and political spaces. Many of these organizations present themselves as secular, or at least not overtly religious. The question for this week asks you to explore what aspects of today’s activists organizations continue patterns from the Third Great Awakening.

1) First, find one or two activist organizations to study and discuss. You can search for an organization on your own, or you can choose from one from these lists (There are more and longer lists out in cyberspace):

2) Then, research the organization’s mission statement or “About Us” page and find some examples of the problems they identify and the solutions they advocate for.

3) Present a question to open discussion of how this organization either continues and/or departs from patterns identified in the Third Great Awakening. Do some of these continuities reflect earlier Awakenings? Do the departures suggest influences from after the Third Great Awakening?

Sydney Design in Contecxt Question

Description

Assessment Task 3-Design in Context: Ecology, Economics and Politics-2000 words project

In this task you will undertake a critical case study of two related products/services/product service

systems that purport to be sustainable in some way. Critically analyse your two selections. Are they

sustainable? Why? According to what criteria? Are the claims made by the

designer/manufacturer/producer honest or accurate or correct? Compare and contrast them – what does

their comparison reveal about their respective approaches to sustainable design? Are they an improvement

on what has come before? Are there better alternatives? What contexts are relevant to their sustainability:

ecology and/or economics and/or politics? Discuss and expand.

To undertake this case study you will make observations, and source information in order to evaluate the

ecological, economic and/or political dimensions of your two selections. You will then explore the potential

for improving the environmental impact of your selection, including a proposed strategic design

intervention that will likely result in less unsustain-able practices. To develop this potential what would you

do differently? You will also design a flowchart/diagram that illustrates your proposed strategic design

intervention. Both the design decisions developed in your essay and the position taken in your intervention

should reference theories and practices studied in the course.

Optional:

You may undertake your critical case study on graphic design, visual communication, illustration and

related fields if you like. Provided you discuss your intended approach with your tutor and they approve it.

Reason being is that some such design fields may prefer to use the assignment to better their

understanding of these fields, rather than the design of a product, service, or product service system.

How Do We Know Ourselves how Do We Know Truth Discussion

Description

Directions

  1. If you are unfamiliar with the Discussion Board tool, watch an overview video created by Blackboard.
  2. Click “Create Thread” to start your post.
  3. Respond to the prompt below, and follow these guidelines:
    • Initial posts should be approximately 200 words.
    • Use complete sentences and work-appropriate vocabulary.
  4. If you need assistance, post on the Questions forum for this course.

Prompt

Your first entry will consist of two paragraphs. See detailed guidance on your initial entry and responses to peers below.

1. Your initial entry:

  • First paragraph:
    • The torture of Peeta raises questions about what our identites really are, or what about us makes us who we are. Cornel West also challenges our notion of individuality. In light of these ideas, how do we know who we are? What makes us human, and what makes us uniquely our selves?
  • Second paragraph:
    • We like to think we know truth. Classes like this one are designed to help us think about this challenge. So, in light of what you’ve learned so far, what do you think truth is? How do we find it? How do we know we have found it? We have covered challenging topics and tough questions, so how do you know your opinion is the right opinion? Do you ever challenge your own notions? How and why or why not?

2. Responses to peers:

  • Read the entries of your peers and respond thoughtfully and substantively to at least one of your peers to receive full credit for this assignment.
    • What do you find most interesting about their responses, and why? Did they make points that were similar to or different from your own?

Case Study Evaluation In the case study students will produce a full research paper around a supplied case problem. The case problem is available on our course site starting Week 2 of the course. More specifically, from the case problem students will identify an appropriate research/evaluation question. From this research/evaluation question students will produce a literature review to understand existing knowledge around the problem. Next, students will critique the current research/evaluation design and provide detailed suggestions for improving the design moving forward. that includes a thorough discussion related sampling techniques, variables, measurements, and quantitative techniques needed to answer the question at hand. Finally, students will use the supplied dataset to test their hypotheses. All papers must include a results and conclusion section. Our course site contains a rubric to help guide your writing. Additionally, there are several “checkpoints”(listed below) that you must adhere to.

University Of Illinois Urbana Champaign Share Your Zen Strategies Presentation

Description

In this assignment you will design and share a brief series of presentation slides (at least 3, no more than 6) about a sport-related psychological issue you have encountered and successfully managed. You will not need to present your slides in a full presentation, only submit them for discussion.

At least one link to an appropriate video, website or research article demonstrating the sport or skill you are describing is required. With only 3-6 slides allowed, it is recommended that you provide multiple links to relevant videos, academic texts or other materials relevant to your topic which might help you demonstrate your points.

to research articles, TED talks, documentaries, news stories or other media, so long as they are relevant to your topic and appropriate to use in a class assignment, are allowed and highly encouraged. You only have 3-6 slides to put your point across, so make the most of the space.

TEP 1 | Identify the Problem

Drawing upon your sport history, identify?at least one?performance issue that you encountered and subsequently managed, successfully. The issue needs to be defined as a psychological issue (this could include negative self-talk, low confidence, high performance anxiety, unrealistic goal-setting, poor time management, or another relevant problem).?Clearly explain how it negatively impacted your performance and offer a visualization to help the audience embody the issue.

STEP 2 | Describe Your Solution

How did you overcome this psychological hurdle? What did you do? How did you do it? Explain and demonstrate. Use any combination of text and visuals, but at least one link to some kind of example demonstrating the skill is required.??

UCLA Social Interaction Theory Paper

Description

First Paper

The first paper, due in week three of the quarter, will ask you to use our early readings to theorize a social problem or situation, large or small. You can use an example from you your own life or from the news. This paper should be between 800 and 1200 words. Grading will be based on how well you have shown your knowledge of the ideas in question and the plausibility of the application, in addition to standard concerns about style, grammar, and form (see rubric below).

This doesn’t have to be a super intense paper. All I really want you to do is apply a theory we read to either something in your own life or something in the news. You’re also entirely free to criticize the thinkers in your papers, talking about what you think they get wrong! Just make sure you turn these into arguments that show either their problems of bad reasoning or their problems of datarather than simply statements. First-person pronouns are fine! In fact, if you’re talking about your life, first-person pronouns make the most sense. The primary purpose of this paper is for you to show how theory is applicable to your life or something in the world. That’s it. All I want you to do is show you can apply a theory to a social phenomenon, like your life in school or your experience growing up. This should be a standard essay, which means you’ll have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Be sure that you have a quote from the text in each body paragraph.

Ashford University Journal 4 Sex in Military Paper

Description

In 1994, the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) DSM-IV removed “transsexualism” as a diagnosis and in June 2015 the American Medical Association (AMA) reported that there is no valid medical reason to ban transgender persons from serving in the U.S. military. In 2016, the U.S. military decided to end its ban on transgender individuals serving. According to a report released by San Francisco State University in 2015, it is estimated that about 15,450 transgender personnel serve in the military, the National Guard, or the Reserve. For this journal assignment, please watch this short video (Links to an external site.) and write a two to three page reflection paper that addresses the points below. You may also want to review the articles listed under “Recommended Resources” at the beginning of Week 4 in this course guide to help you complete this journal assignment.

  • Based on the resources you reviewed (i.e. not your personal opinion), what are the arguments made by people who think that theban on transgender individuals serving in the military should have been maintained? What are the arguments made by people who supported the repeal of the ban?
  • According to the video, how are sex and gender distinct from one another? How is sexuality related to this discussion (or is it?)?
  • The military is considered a hyper-masculine, yet very close knit, environment. What about this might be particularly appealing to transgender men (i.e., individuals who were born with female anatomy but identify as male)? To transgender women (i.e., people who were born with male anatomy but identify as female)?

Great Basin College INT 339 Vegetarians Journal Paper

Description

When you respond to texts, try to formulate claims. That makes it much easier to find and use specific textual evidence and examples to support your ideas. Using quotes in summaries doesn’t open texts up, and that’s ultimately what we want to do. We want to read critically. Keep the analysis sandwich in mind. Basically, if you analyze the texts, I’ll be pretty stoked.

If you need a break from my prompts, you’re in luck! At this point in the semester, you probably don’t need me to provide them anyway. However, if you do like them, let me know. I might be able to spice the Pollan journals up. That said, I’ve provided an example thesis.

We are reading four texts this week. One is in the anthology. Two are posted as PDFs. One is the introduction to a book we will be reading for the remainder of the semester.

-Laura Fraser, “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian” (Norton Mix 132-136)

-Steven G. Kellman excerpt from Fish, Flesh, and Foul: The Anti-Vegetarian Animus (pdf on WebCampus)

-David Foster Wallace, “Consider the Lobster” (pdf on WebCampus)

-Michael Pollan, Introduction to The Omnivore’s Dilemma

-Clip from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRd13bMWhsU

Note: You don’t have to write about the Scott Pilgrim clip. It’s just for fun and to add another perspective on attitudes towards vegans/veganism.

Example Thesis

In “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian,” Laura Fraser doesn’t really make an argument against vegetarianism. Instead, she makes a disingenuous critique of vegetarians that portrays them as selfish people striving to fit in rather than people motivated by ethics or specific interpretations of health.
