To demonstrate an understanding of palliative care social work considerations for diverse populations, you are asked to select a vulnerable population (e.g., children/teens, homeless, older adults, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ2+ community, those living with serious mental illness, etc.) and write a seven- to ten-page paper that includes:

• An overview of the population of choice, including pertinent information to help the reader understand the details of this population’s social location (i.e., description of population and two or three aspects of identity);
• A review of the relevant literature on this population and what palliative care means for this population, including barriers and special considerations;
• The role of social work in delivering palliative care to this population, including a special consideration of unique interventions and strategies. Some consideration to the roles of other members of the interdisciplinary team should also be discussed. This section must include relevant (peer-reviewed) knowledge in the social work practice area.
• An analysis of the particular NASW Ethical Standards and Principles that are of specific relevance to the topic and potential challenges that may be presented to these standards and principles (https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English (Links to an external site.)).

Students are to ensure their discussion is synthesized with both external references and with knowledge gained from class to demonstrate critical thinking. While you are allowed to use lay press, they are also expected to include at least five (5) to seven (7) peer-reviewed journal articles as well.

REACTION REPORT GUIDELINES

Typically, writing assignments fall into two categories; one is reflecting where we mostly summarize and confirm our understanding; and two is analytical, where we provide components of new information, make connections, and express logical opinions and conclusions. This assignment is the latter.

The reaction report should be a minimum of three pages double-spaced. It should be your opinion regarding the points that the writer has made in the assigned article. A minimum amount of summarizing or repeating of the thoughts of the writer is expected. Your task is to identify the conclusions that the writer is reaching, then respond in your own words to his or her perspective. A requirement for each reaction paper is that it includes an application of information found outside of the article. This information can come from a source such as the text, another article, your personal experience or an observation.

The following questions may help you compose the paper.

What is the main point or points made by the author?

What is his/her basis or source of information? Is it credible, logical?

What would be the opposing position to the information presented?

What other information needs to be gathered?

What other information or issues relate to this discussion?

What issues do you have with the content?

• Variation over facts and data
• Different view of the viability of the process or methods
• Conflict over the purpose or priorities
• That there are other values, morals, principles that are relevant

As a special educator, you will fulfill many roles and responsibilities for your students, families, other staff members and for your administration. It is important to know these roles and responsibilities so that you maintain professional, ethical, and legal dispositions at all times.

Allocate 2 hours in the field to support this field experience.

As a special educator, you will have many roles and responsibilities. Collaborate with your mentor teacher to reflect on the following professional roles and responsibilities of a special education teacher:

• Case managing and managing others, i.e., paraeducators, aides
• Differentiating lesson plans with general education teachers
• Legal and confidentiality concerns when working with students and families/caregivers
• Conflict resolution among students and staff
• Being involved beyond the classroom
• Advocacy and mentoring students, families, and other colleagues
• Lifelong learning and staying current on educational trends and legislation for special education
• Any additional roles and responsibilities your mentor describes

Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.

After the discussion with your mentor, complete a 500-750 word reflection based on your findings. Discuss any new insights, areas of concern, and what you feel you need to know more about as you complete your studies.

In addition, discuss what steps you will take to keep yourself informed on special education and how you plan to be a lifelong learner after you enter the classroom.

Reflect upon how you will use this information in your future professional practice.
