UNLV Mexican American War Discussion

Question Description

I’m working on a urban planning writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

1. Examine the Mexican War and its aftermath. What were its ultimate consequences for Native Americans, slaves, and free Blacks in the newly acquired areas. Think back to Thomas Jefferson’s idea of an “Empire of Liberty.” Did the newly acquired land from the Mexican War promote Jefferson’s idea, or as with the Louisiana Purchase, was it an empire of liberty for only a few?

2. Explain the various events that led to the collapse of the Union in 1861. Why and when did certain slave states seceded from the Union? Why did some slave states—Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri—decide not to secede? In your opinion, who was responsible for the coming of the Civil War- the South or the North? Was the war inevitable?

FIT Western Civilizations Tendency to Broaden Individual Rights Discussion

Description

Throughout this course, we have examined western civilization’s tendency to broaden individual rights.  This trend has produced modern western societies with more robust political and economic freedom when compared to Europe in 1200 A.D.

However, commentators like David Brooks of the NYT express concern that western society’s focus on expanding individual freedom has yielded unintended consequences that manifest in a deterioration of social cohesion.  For example, Brooks notes that western society increasingly suffers from: sharp increases in people reporting loneliness, depression, and in rising suicide rates.  Moreover, Brooks laments that many western nations are experiencing a decline in marriage rates and falling trust in institutions.

Is Brooks right to attribute these statistics to the excesses of western individualism?  Why or why not?

Here is a link to a talk Brooks gave at Davidson College where he made some of the arguments I’m referencing:

Question Description

I’m working on a history writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Historian Stephanie McCurry writes: “The Confederate war involved a profound reckoning. Before Confederates were defeated, their political project had failed. The new nation Confederates set out to build had fallen victim not just to enemy armies but to the manifest poverty of its reactionary vision of the republic, and the determined resistance of the Confederate people to it.”

oConfederate Reckoning Epilogue (PDF)

Identify and explain six reasons why, in McCurry’s estimation and analysis, that the Confederacy was destined to fail. In particular, consider how matters of race, gender, and class contributed to the fundamental problems with the Confederate project.

San Diego State University Social Perception Discussion

Description

Please contribute something helpful, beneficial and/or interesting that you have found related to the topic of social perception. Youtube video links, online articles, and other relevant materials are acceptable. Once you have submitted your post, you will then respond to at least two other posts within the thread.

Response:

Something I found interesting about the topic of social perception is the sources of error in attribution. To be more specific, the self serving bias. The self serving bias indicates that when you’ve done a great job on something, it was completely on your own merit, however, if you did not do a great job on something, an outside factor is responsible for the job being done poorly. I find this to be interesting because the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

can you please respond to the peer discussion above
