A problem has emerged with the working conditions at the call center in Bangalore, which leads to an uncomfortable conversation with CEO Jacob Zielinski.  An employee is hospitalized and the media has quoted him saying he is under a lot of stress, is over worked, and his pay is not enough to provide for his family. In your response to the CEO, consider how employees’ motivation could be improved through changes in leadership style, what changes need to be made in work practices, and what statements need to be made in a response to the media.

A few thoughts that came to mind to me immediately follow:

The situation presents an immediate crisis as well as some longer-term issues that require action.

1.The CEO needs information that can be used to respond to the media about the situation of the employee in the hospital and the concerns about the organization’s treatment of all the employees and their working conditions.

2.Longer-term issues such as the possible need for changes in the working conditions, perceptions about obligations to the employees, compliance with the employment laws, balance of providing for the employees and their families and the organization’s financial considerations need to be addressed. Is there a way to provide other rewards in addition to compensation that may help with the well-being of the family for little or no additional cost? This is where the information about motivation, leadership, and retention will be helpful to share with the CEO.

In our world, we commonly think of gender as just male and female, especially when we’re categorized by things like color and clothing. It seems like we can’t even look at anything without seeing it divided into boys and girls — this is heteronormativity. But the thing is, not everyone identifies as one or the other, or expresses themselves that way. Even if someone “looks” like a guy (also evidence of heteronormativity), they may prefer to use the pronouns “she/her” — and we need to respect that by not misgendering people. Some people identify as genderfluid, which means that your identify (like male or female), can move from one side of the spectrum to the other, and some people are genderless, or identify with neither of the genders that are imposed on people. The most important thing to remember is that everyone’s gender can be unique and everyone’s gender identity, gender orientation, and gender expression is important to respect.

Further, “female” and “male” even as solely biological designations still exclude some people, who are often classified as “intersex.” Intersex means that one’s anatomy or genetics does not line up with typical expectations for either male or female people. Heteronormativity would have society believe that to be intersex is to not be normal — which is simply untrue. For intersex people, doctors and parents have often decided their gender at birth and genital reconstructive surgery is performed to turn what is seen as atypical genitalia into something that is recognizably either male or female. Intersex identity also has its own spectrum, which means that anatomy for an intersex person can be entirely different for another intersex person.

Introduction paragraph (3/4 page)

Start with a hook that grabs the reader’s interest and introduces the essay topic.

  • Next, define “intrinsic” and “extrinsic” motivation.

Then illustrate “intrinsic” and “extrinsic” motivation with your own personal example of each one.

Add a transition sentence that credits the authors you plan to use in this paper, introduces the topic of flow states, and brings up the perspective of extreme sport athletes.

End with your introduction paragraph with a 1 sentence thesis statement that is specific, concise, clear, and arguable.

Thesis (one sentence)

Thesis Question: Using examples from specific athletes’ flow experiences from our Essay 3 readings, argue whether you think intrinsic or extrinsic motivation is more capable of increasing an athlete’s peak performances. Support your thesis with 2 reasons, all in one sentence.

Body Paragraphs

Very Important Requirement: Provide specific examplesfrom the stories of at least 2 athletes featured in our assigned readings.

Provide supporting quotations from Happiness Lab, Kotler’s Rise of Superman, and the other assigned readings.

Provide 3 Body Paragraphs. The first two body paragraphs will support your thesis. The third body paragraph will contain your counterargument and rebuttal.

Each body paragraph should be restricted to supporting one specific thesis idea. There should not be multiple main ideas in one paragraph.

No other outside sources besides those assigned should be used in your essay.

  • Conclusion

Restate your thesis using new wording and phrasing so you are not simply cutting and pasting.

End with some interesting reflections on the topic that go beyond merely repeating what you said earlier.

Organization Tips

Thesis formation: The thesis should subdivide into the same number of points as your total number of body paragraphs. If you have two body paragraphs, your thesis would subdivide into two points. Thesis needs to be the last sentence of your introduction. The thesis should fully answer the essay question. It should also be specific, concise, and arguable.

Body Paragraph Organization and Unity: Each body paragraph should discussion one idea that supports the thesis; in other words, body paragraphs should not repeat ideas from previous paragraphs and should not contain more than one main idea.

  • Topic Sentences: Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that tells the reader which thesis idea that paragraph will be about.

Concluding Sentences: Each body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that restates topic sentence main ideas and adds supportive reasoning. The goal is to summarize the main examples you covered in that body paragraph.

Quotations: You will need to support any assertions you make with a discussion of quotations from the texts assigned. All quotations should have an introductory phrase and should use the following MLA format: Westwick and Neushul write, “XX” (24).

Quotation Analysis: All quotations should be followed by 4-5 or more sentences that provide a detailed explanation of how the quotation supports your body paragraph’s main idea.

Title: Divided into two parts separated by a colon. Centered. Double-spaced like your heading and the rest of your paper. Capitalize all key words. Should be a fragment. Not underlined or in boldface. No period at the end of the title. Your title should not just copy the title of this essay prompt or the title of the readings. Example:

Roosevelt called his program to reform the nation’s economy during the Great Depression the New Deal. Not only did it bring about major reforms, and introduce tougher regulation of big business, it also set a precedent for greatly expanded federal government involvement in the economy and society. Some of the programs that were initiated had a lasting impact while others were struck down by the Supreme Court. Just as the depression impacted people differently, so did the reforms that were passed during the New Deal.

INSTRUCTIONS:

In this 5-part discussion, you will (1) view a self-selected film, (2) compose a 3-paragraph original post; (3 & 4) reply to two classmates’ original posts; and (5) reflect on the film review experience.

1. Review the materials above; then select a film of your own choosing. Consider stretching yourself for this assignment. You may want to watch one of the classic films that were mentioned in the lecture video or text. Or if you have never watched a documentary, consider watching one. If foreign films are new to you, consider that some of today’s best cinema is being created outside of this country. 1. Today’s society have many parallels from past society. One I notice is the way the black man is treat by society in all phases of life. Since the days of slavery black men have been the subject of most of the cultural terror from white men. That still happen today just in different forms. One recent example would be the Ahmad Arbury situation in Georgia. He was basically lynched for being in the wrong neighborhood. Politically black men have been the subject of policies for years. Most recent law that effect us today is the 3 strike law. This was designed to fill the prisons that were being built by private corporations.

2. The history learned in the course is similar to what I have heard in other classes along the lines of slavery and freedom. But we never viewed it as whites gaining there freedom from British. Sure they wanted to be there own country but the British did not per say own them. George Washington came from a wealthy family not a poor one. However even though they were rich they still wanted to be free from British rule.

3. There were no immigration laws in the US before 1880 people could come unrestricted. The impact of immigration laws can be seen in our population. Latino Americans now out number African American. This became possible because of immigration laws allowing people to become citizens.

One way that present-day society mirrors society in the past three centuries occurs in the fallacy of race in modern humans. In the video: Race, The Power of an Illusion from timestamp 2:30-2:42, “Physical differences are not what makes race. What makes race are the laws and practices the life chances and opportunities based on those differences” (California Newsreel). One may conclude from this afore mentioned quote that race is in fact made up to put all humans into categories in order to create advantage and disadvantages for humans that have certain phenotypes. This creation of race to favor some phenotypes over other phenotypes is wrong. This “illusion of race” creates fallacies in society like stereotypes, and fears. In early American History the focus seems to concentrate more on assimilation and colonization glossing over any stories or information that disagrees with these ideas. In the past history was written and shaped by those that thought race was real, and the laws of the time favored assimilation, and even allowed mistreatment of minorities. Today there are laws against the mistreatment of minorities as well as laws that seek to promote pluralism in America.

These laws shaped the way assimilation affected the population from economic opportunity and prosperity, and further created stereotypes as well as fears. Part 1: Project Requirements

As the course syllabus indicates, all senior seminars involve independent research. This semester, you are to complete a 6-8 page, double-spaced (12 point, standard font; excluding references and title pages) research paper. Keep the following in mind when preparing to write:

  • Papers must include course texts. Conduct bibliographic research to supplement your response to the question and/or your point of view, but also consider making use of the fiction/non-fiction we have read to illustrate a point or an idea. Does a certain character exemplify your claim or social phenomenon? Does the way an author writes demonstrate your idea or data from a social/scientific investigation?
  • Papers must include at least three secondary sources which you find on your own. These should be appropriate to the task and to college-level writing. This means, for example, that your sources are
  1. reliable, and from reputable places. Does the source have an author? Has the piece been written for a recognized institution that must remain credible and accurate (eg: academic journal, news organization, government website)? To ensure this requirement for your source is met, avoid blogs, YouTube videos, articles without an author, and random websites publishing content that does not appear to be carefully researched. You must be able to evaluate the reliability and trustworthiness of your own source carefully.
  2. appropriate for a college-level paper. Dictonary.com, Wikipedia, and other encyclopedia-type sources may be helpful for you in starting your research, but these kinds of sources do not belong in college-level writing.

Part 2: Project Guidelines

OPTION 1: What is the biggest challenge faced by an increasingly interconnected, global world? What role do global cities play in the challenge – do they help? Or deepen the challenges, making situations worse? How have the texts assigned this semester helped to define, exemplify, or offer solutions for the challenge you’ve chosen to focus on for this project? In this paper, you should research and write about a challenge or problem, consider its relationship to global cities, and explain how it connects with texts we’ve read this semester. Refer to the general guidelines above to make sure your project meets the requirements.

OPTION 2: Visual arts – painting, sculpture, photography – can often convey feelings and perception about social issues. Globalization is no exception to this phenomenon, and in fact, various aspects of globalization have inspired many works of visual art. (Consider, for example, Gupta’s sculpture introduced in our Module 1 lecture (Links to an external site.) around 11:05, or An Immigrant’s Journey (Links to an external site.), from Module 3, featuring photographs by John Moore!) In this paper, you should find examples of visual art that connect with ideas and texts presented through some of our coursework. It’s important to find a specific focus (ie migration, or poverty, or climate change, etc), drawing on our readings or videos to develop your discussion of it. Then, provide examples of visual art you researched, including images and your narrative description of how/why they’re connected to your focus. Note this paper should be slightly longer than the page count specified in the requirements to account for the inclusion of images!

           Introduction

This section must accomplish the following tasks in the following order. I prefer that you devote a single short paragraph to each task. 1. Identify the article, and describe in one or two sentences what problem(s) it addresses and what view(s) it defends. 2. State precisely which aspect(s) of the article your analysis will address and precisely what you intend to accomplish. This must not be a vague statement like “I will evaluate the author’s views…” or “I will show where I agree and where I disagree….”. Rather, it must be a very specific and concise statement of the case you intend to make, and the basic considerations you intend to employ in making it. (You will probably find it impossible to write this section before your analysis has gone through the rough draft phase.)

           Summary

The rules for constructing a summary are as follows: 1. For the most part, you should summarize only those aspects of the article that are relevant to your critique. If you summarize more than that, it should only be because anything less will not provide the reader an adequate understanding of the author’s basic concerns. Do not produce an unnecessarily lengthy or detailed summary. As a general rule of thumb, the summary and critique will usually be roughly equal in length. 2. The summary must present the author’s views in the best possible light. It must be a thorough, fair, and completely accurate representation of the author’s views. Misrepresentation of the author’s views, especially selective misrepresentation (i.e., misrepresentation for the purpose of easy refutation) is inappropriate and will be heavily penalized. 3. The summary must contain absolutely no critical comments. (This restriction does not prevent you from expressing some uncertainty about what the author is saying, however. ) 4. The summary should be organized logically, not chronologically. Each paragraph in the summary will ordinarily present argument(s) the author makes in support of a particular position. This means that, depending on the organization of the article itself, a single paragraph from the summary may contain statements that are made in very different places in the article. The summary itself should be organized in a way that makes the author’s views make sense. Under no conditions are you to simply relate what the author says the way that s/he says them. A summary that goes something like: “The author begins by discussing…..Then s/he goes on to say……then, etc.” is unacceptable.

           Critique

Your critique should be organized in a way that reflects the structure of your summary. This is easy to do since you have selected for summary only those aspects of the article about which you have something to say. Be sure your critique obeys the rules laid out in the Writing Style section above. Here are three different approaches to doing a critique.

Define your project in terms of arguments and views that you find problematic. In your critique show how the author’s conclusion does not follow, either because (a) the author’s reasons are false or (b) the author’s reasoning is mistaken, or (c) the author has failed to make other important considerations that tend to undermine the conclusion.

Define your project in terms of arguments and views that you basically agree with. In your critique, consider ways in which the author’s views might reasonably be criticized. Then attempt to strengthen the author’s position by showing how these criticisms can actually be met. If you use this technique, be sure you don’t consider criticisms that the author actually does respond to in the context of the article (unless, of course, you think that the author has failed to answer the objections effectively).

  1. Define your project in terms of arguments and views that you find interesting, but which you are currently disinclined to fully accept or fully reject. Carefully articulate the strongest considerations in favor of the view and the strongest considerations against the views. Then carefully explain why you remain undecided and indicate precisely what sort of information or arguments would be required for you to be able to make up your mind.
  2.            Conclusion
  3. Briefly summarize the steps you have taken in reaching your conclusions. The conclusion should be very short and it should contain no new information, claims or criticism. This restriction prevents you from making closing comments which are not sufficiently articulated in the body of the paper.
