Clemson Addictions Practitioners by Kathy Lay Narrative and Critical Reflection

Description

Narrative and Critical Reflection for Addictions Practitioners by Kathy Lay.

This exercise is contributed by Kathy Lay, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Indiana University-Indianapolis.  The purpose of this writing exercise is to promote students’ self awareness and critical thinking skills as it relates to addiction.

Explanation of the assignment as follows:

Experiences we have whether they are personal or professional with regard to substance abuse and dependence continuously shape the lens with which we view addiction and have implications for our practices with clients. Some experiences foster personal growth and development by challenging narrow viewpoints that do not allow us to see the complexity of addictive disorders. Other experiences allow us to continue seeing addiction through a constricted lens that not only filters new learning, but actually serves to crystallize negative experiences. It is for this reason, that critical reflection is necessary as a life-long learning principle. However, it is necessary to have a guide for critical reflection. This exercise provides a guide for reflection on experiences with substance abuse/dependence.

The student is asked to write the narrative of the experience, externalize the experience by naming it and responding to the specific questions. The exercise allows the learner to acknowledge the power of the experience, reflect for the purpose of deconstruction of the story, and to open space
for new learning through reflection on a preferred way of being.

Guidelines for the exercise are as follows:

a.. Students are asked to write a brief narrative of an experience they have had either personally or professionally (self, family member, client; please keep personal information confidential) with alcohol abuse and/or dependence. “Think of an experience you have had personally or professionally with addiction. Write the narrative/story of the experience.”

b. Name the experience. For example, the title might be, “Oh, no, not again!”

c. The following questions should be completed pertaining to your narrative. In each of the blank spaces in the question, insert the title of your narrative and then answer the questions.

Assignment: Experience Reflection Paper

Name the experience___________________________________________________.

  • If __________ could talk to you, what would it say?
  • What are the main themes related to __________ embedded in the narrative?
  • What would or does __________ have you thinking about addiction?
  • What would __________ have you doing about or in relation to addiction?
  • Does __________ encourage particular values about addiction? Particular ethics?
  • Are these values/ethics in any way in conflict with your preferred values and ethics?
  • If you could change (re-write) the narrative of __________ in any way, what would you change?
  • What do you think would have to happen in order for that change to take place?
  • How does the narrative of __________ influence you personally and professionally?
  • What are the socio-political implications of __________

Now, reflect on your answers and write a reflective summary statement.

Marriage Survey Essay

Description

Please in your own words and make simple. Please don’t use paraphrasing websites and no plagiarism.

Directions

Please conduct a short, nonscientific survey of your friends who are married. After collecting your information, please compare and contrast the couples you interviewed. This is a very effective way to understand the concept, even if you are married yourself. You may see a vast difference in the responses of older couples vs. younger couples. If possible try to interview couples who represent different racial-ethnic groups. Did you find a cultural difference?

After you have interviewed 2-3 couples, compile your information into an essay. You do not need to include all of the specific interview answers, just make general observations such as: “Of the 3 couples I interviewed 2 were recently married and 1 had been married over 10 years. Of the newlywed couples only 1 had lived together prior to marriage and they had not told their parents about their living arrangements. This couple had gone to elaborate lengths to cover up or conceal this information. They were concerned about the reaction of their parents and didn’t want to upset them. This couple told me they had been together for 5 years prior to their marriage and keeping the information secret was sometimes difficult during the holidays and added some stress to their relationship.”

Your paper should be roughly13-14 paragraphs. Including an introductory paragraph, a paragraph reporting the responses to each question (that’s 12 paragraphs right there!), and a concluding paragraph. The average length of this paper is 7-8 pages double spaced.

Married Couples Survey Questions

General information to be gathered for each couple while you are interviewing them:

Sex of the person you are interviewing (male or female) and the age of the person you are interviewing.

  1. How long were you dating your spouse before you got engaged, before you were married? How old were you both when you married each other? Is this your 1st marriage?
  1. How long have you been married and how did you meet?
  1. Did your parents approve of your dating relationship with this person before you got married?
  1. Do your parents get along with your spouse?
  1. Do you have children or do you both want children? Did you agree on a specific number of children?
  1. Do you get along with your in-laws, if not, explain?
  1. Did you live together before you got married, if so how long?
  1. Was love the primary reason that you got married, is it (or was it) enough?
  1. What things do you have in common with your spouse? What are the biggest differences between you?
  1. If you could go back in time would you marry this same person again?
  1. What advice would you give someone getting married in the near future?

My Ideal Society: Detailed Outline

Overview

As a starting point for creating a comprehensive paper on your ideal society, you will develop a detailed outline. An outline allows you to evaluate your content, organize the information, create a flow, and integrate sources. A skeleton outline (i.e., a few words for each heading and subheading) does not meet the objective of this outline. Content should be more in-depth than just a few keywords and should include references to sources consulted. Once you complete this step, you will have a good start for the final paper.

Instructions

  1. Create a detailed outline as shown in the example that meets the following requirements:
    • Include specific information/content for the topic.
    • Organize the essay by Roman numerals (main headers) and capital letters (subheadings).
    • Create flow by making sure the content provided is logical and easy to follow.
    • Sources and citations are required for this outline and must be cited in APA Style. Integrate several sources throughout the essay. (At least five sources are required.)

    Example of detailed outline:

    1. Over and over again, families are left without their loved ones due to acts of suicide. The social problem of suicide includes not only those who have died, but also those who have attempted suicide. Although there are warning signs as well as suicide prevention programs, suicide continues to be a leading cause of death.
      1. Suicide carries social and moral meaning in most societies. At both the individual and population levels, the suicide rate has long been understood to correlate with cultural, social, political, and economic forces (Smith & Brown, year of publication).
      2. Given its unique nature, research on suicide faces a series of obstacles that limit progress in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of the problem.
    2. Suicide is not something new; rather, it is something that is part of civilization’s history.
      1. The history of suicide dates back to Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where suicide was used as part of ritual (Anderson, year of publication).
        1. Suicide in ancient Egypt was viewed as a neutral event because death was merely a passage from one form of existence to another. It was a means of avoiding disgrace, abandonment, guilt, cowardice, or the experience of the loss of a loved one (Anderson, year of publication).
        2. Cleopatra committed suicide as part of a ritual.

ReferencesAnderson, A. B. (year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. City, State: Publisher.Smith, C., & Brown, D. E. (year of publication). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pp. x-x.*These references are included to demonstrate basic APA Style rules regarding references and in-text citations. CC The Shock of Heroine Lilith Waking & Discovering the Reality Discussion

Description

Do a “close reading” by finding 2 sentences that tell us we are in a different world than the “realist” one we know. Write the two sentences at the beginning of your post and write two chunky paragraphs about them. Why are these sentences particularly significant in helping the reader to begin to put together the world of Dawn?

choose two from the following quotes

“There was no visible speakers of any kind, just as there was no spot from which the light originated. The entire ceiling seemed to be a speaker and a light..”

“It’s wrong to assume that I must be a sex you are familiar with, but as it happens I am male.”

“… in an edible bowl that would disintegrate if she emptied it and did not eat it”

“from a number of other worlds”

“Cloth! A folded mound of clothing. She snatched it up, dropped it in her eagerness, picked it up
again and began putting it on.”

“…her hand touched the long scar across her abdomen. She had
acquired it somehow between her second and third Awakenings, had examined it fearfully, wondering
what had been done to her.”

“Food continued to appear mysteriously when she napped. Water still flowed from the bathroom faucets. The light still shone. But beyond that, there was nothing, no one, no sound unless she made it, no object with which to amuse herself. There were only her bed and table platforms. These would not come up from the floor, no matter how she abused them. Stains quickly faded and vanished from their surfaces.”

“Unconcerned, her captors began a complex new series of questions and exercises.”

the reading is a book called dawn by lillth brood

Write two chunky paragraphs about the following:

1. Find one sentence in Dawn in Part II or III that you believe is especially illuminating in terms of Butler’s construction of an alien culture in Dawn. Quote the sentence and write a paragraph about how this sentence tells us something important and complicated about the Oankali.

2. What is the most interesting and complex representation of aliens you have encountered in your lifetime? It could be a TV show, a film, a piece of fiction…any cultural form in which aliens are represented. Find out the date your representation of aliens was created, include the date, and write a few sentences about why you find this representation of aliens especially significant.

“Lilith saw that the plant was beginning to open, and suddenly she knew what was happening.”

They didn’t have enough of us to make a fair trade… They didn’t have enough for the Taoht. They had to make more.”

you can pick from one of the two quotes

Description

What legal issues have impacted your institution?

True understanding of the law is in its application. Analyzing how laws or regulations have been applied in case studies deepens your ability to use them to support your own institution. Legal matters and case studies—topics frequently addressed in professional newsletters—can help you become more versed in this important area.

This week’s Assignment is designed to expand your legal expertise on a campus that is already somewhat familiar by analyzing what could have been done to avoid or mitigate a potentially litigious situation before it escalated.

Research an employment-related legal issue that occurred recently at your institution or one similar to yours. Prepare a brief summary of the issue, describing how it was resolved. Additionally, describe what additional steps the managers and leaders involved could have done to avoid or mitigate the situation.

UNSW Philosophy Essay

Description

Question: Ethics and the Good Life.

Imagine you get the following email from an old friend:

Hey! I’m sorry I’ve been out of touch for so long. The truth is, I’ve been struggling lately. I feel directionless, like I have no purpose. I keep having these nihilistic thoughts that there’s no point to anything. Sometimes I even have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Don’t worry, I spoke to my doctor and it’s not depression, but I do feel like I need help—not medical help, something else, something deeper. I remember you saying at the start of the year, when we were last in touch, that you were planning to take a philosophy class, something with ‘ethics’ in the title, and that you were going to be reading Aristotle. I’ve never read him but I’ve heard that he has some interesting ideas about living a good life. I was thinking that maybe he could help me—or, actually, that maybe you could help me. Have you read anything in his work that might help me get over this slump? Anything that might help me get unstuck and back to feeling like I have a direction, a purpose? I know it sounds kind of cheesy to ask you for ‘the meaning of life’, but I actually think that that’s what I need! Did you find an answer in Aristotle? Since I’ve never studied philosophy, I’d be really grateful if you could explain to me, clearly and straightforwardly, the ideas that you think I’ll find helpful, as though you were writing an essay. I know I can count on you, and I appreciate your help!

Do your best to fulfill the friend’s request, drawing on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. Your reply should take the form of an academic essay.

———————

I have attached the 2 readings and the class ppt for reference

Another file is the writing guidelines, please strictly follow all of the instructions such as the format/quotations/use of first person singular, etc

-Doesn’t have to use external resources (other than required reading)

Citation Example: Aristotle: in your text, in parenthesis, put the book and chapter number and

the standard page and line numbers which are found in the margins of the reading. So, the first line of Book I, chapter 7 would be quoted as follows:

“But let us return once again to the good we are looking for, and consider just what it could be.” (Nicomachean Ethics I.7, 1097a15)

At the end of your assessment you should have a section titled “Bibliography”. Simply enter the correct bibliographical information there:

De Anza College Week 4 Chinese Culture and Educational Success Interviews Analysis

Description

Investigative Assignment #1 – Learn about culture and educational success (Week 4)

Part A – Talk with three people (anyone you have access to in your home and through phone, email, etc.) about their perspective on educational success and culture.

The goal is to learn about people’s viewpoints on whether or not there is a connection between one’s cultural background and educational success. Even those who say they do not “have culture” often draw on cultural aspects of their lives to navigate education. Ask them the following questions. Feel free to ask others.

1)  When you hear the word culture, what does that word mean for you? Would you say you have a culture? Please explain.

2)   Do you think there’s a connection between someone’s culture and educational success (e.g., good grades in school, going to college, etc.)? Why or why not? What about any connection between culture and economic success (e.g., good career/job, high salary, owning a home, etc.)?

3)   Think about your own educational experiences, do you think there’s a culture in schools? Why or why not?

4)   If they say yes to #3 ask: Can you tell me a little about the school culture in some of the schools you’ve attended (think of a school that stands out for you)?  Do you think school culture can influence whether or not students are successful in school? Why or why not?

Part B – Submit on Canvas via Turnitin no later than Saturday, April 23 by 11:59PM

In approximately 4-5 double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins, answer the following. You must use the following format.

Section #1 – In approximately 1 ½ -2 pages, describe who you talked to (no names, use friend, co-worker, mother, cousin, husband, partner, etc.) and a little about their background (if you know anything), then summarize your conversation with each person. You do not need to transcribe the interviews word-for-word.

Section #2 –  In approximately 1 ½ -2 pages, use your interviews and material from week 2 (readings and/or lecture), and one reading from either week 3 or week 4 to discuss what you learned about perceptions of culture and educational success. You must refer to specific points in Sections #1. You must refer to specific points from the material in week 2. You must refer to specific points regarding the main research results discussed in the week 3 or week 4 reading. Think about any connections between the Chinese culture and the interviews. Think about whether or not the interviews seem similar or contradictory to the class material.
