Image Cloud Analysis

Description

The goal of these “Image Cloud” exercises is to get you to “think in images”. What we want you to do is to look at an advertisement and “see” other images that relate to it in one way or another. This can be literal, and it can also be more subjective…Meaning, it can be a “feeling” that another image relates to the advertisement outside of itself, and you just “know” it should be in relation to that particular advertisement. Also, this can be related to ANY element within the selected ad (language cues, image cues, etc).

Hopefully these exercises will help you to look at advertisements from various time periods in a unique way, and also perhaps shed new light on what’s going on “within” the advertisement from a deeper cultural perspective.

1) Chose ONE image to analyze from the three provided, below.

2) Brainstorm a word/pharase list related to the image: write down whatever comes to mind regarding the advertisement. What do you see? What don’t you see? What are the shapes? Colors? Messages? Objects? Symbols? What is it trying to “say”? What creative materials and forms are used within the image (mostly photography? Illustration?), etc…Let your mind wander…FOR THIS PART, you will turn it in as a TEXT ENTRY within the Assignment window (i.e., you don’t have to attach it as a separate file).

Break this “brainstorm” down into these components:

A) The “Literal Message(s)”

i) What are the literal, obvious things that are in the image? Do a direct, literal description of what is in the ad

B) The “Linguistic Message” – If there is text in the ad, evaluate it by discussing:

i) “Denoted” text: What are the linguistic messages (tag lines, other text in the ad, etc) that are obvious that are in the advertisement (if any…some ads many not have a lot of words in the them, or any).

ii) “Connoted” text: What are the messages in the text that are inferred? Meaning, what might the “hidden” messages be within the printed text? What are the words trying to say if it is not direct?

C) The “Symbolic Message(s)”

i) Find the signs or symbols that are within the Image (rather than the text). What are the NON-verbal (non-linguistic) parts of the message the advertisement is trying to show you? What does the “art” part of the ad (the illustration, the photograph, etc) say without using words? Just do your best to come up with things to find and talk about here!

3) Now, start Googling for images using your word and phrase list from the Brainstorm above.

4) Open up GIMP and start creating your Image Cloud…and have fun! 🙂 Upload your finished JPEG file to this Assignment page(NOT the original, saved GIMP file on your computer! As per the GIMP Training Video, FIRST save your Image Cloud collage as a GIMP file with layers, THEN “merge” all the Layers, THEN “Export As” as a JPEG format, THEN close GIMP (you can “Discard” any changes if it asks if you want to save them) once you are finished.

Stress is considered a common problem based on the vast majority of people

experiencing stress in one way or another. Different scholars have provided different

descriptions of stress, with the main illustration being the internal state caused by different

state of mind. Stress is generally generated by conditions that tend to be impossible to meet,

hence resulting in a breakdown of the individual at a particular level. Although stress is

mostly perceived as a negative term, it is important to understand that it can be perceived

positively as well. That takes place when it provides one with an opportunity of gaining

something.

One of the most significant parts that fascinates me about this topic is that everyone

experiences stress in one way or another. Stress can have both mental and physical effects.

Additionally, stress has the potential of causing eating disorders, insomnia, lower resistance

to illness, and etc. Some of the key ways to reduce stress include understanding its proper

management and using stress as a motivation factor.

The main purpose of a paper on stress is to understand some of the most significant

reasons why one needs to manage their stress. A key way to help keep stress healthy is

through its management. Although stress management includes putting in a good amount of

time and effort, it is also important to understand that its rewards are great. Therefore, some

of the key ideas that might be accomplished by exploring this problem are making people

aware of stress management’s importance and far-reaching benefits. The intended goal is to

evoke change among the general community (Bhargava & Trivedi, 2018). Some of such

changes in the community are experiencing fewer headaches which tend to be less severe and

benefit from a solution to this problem is everyone because it is a common factor that

Growing up in Dorchester country Maryland we always use to ride past Harriett Tubman’s childhood house. It was taught to us at a young age who she was and what she did to free the slaves. I’ve been to the Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad National Park many times since its opening and was always in awe at the conditions slaves lived under. It wasn’t until reading the Slave Resistance narratives that the true feeling of actual conditions set in. It pulled at my heart strings and made me quite upset at the actions of slave owners. The museum was a bit lighter on how it portrayed their lives though. The underground railroad was one example of a subversive tactic used to resist slavery. Arnold Gragston nicknamed by himself as the “Conductor” would organize the underground railroad at night to free fellow slaves while working during the day. With his master never suspecting him of such activities, he chose to live on his master’s plantation as a life was provided for him there. The greatest story of resistance for myself was reading about William Colbert’s brother January. We all know the greatest way to invoke a reaction from someone is to not let it bother you. January took his beatings to a point where he enraged his Master and without crying out until he had no voice, he said with a hoarse voice “Massa! Massa! have mercy on dis poor nigger.” January stood strong against his beatings and resisted becoming dehumanized. The more depressing resistance to slavery by “Slaves” was suicide and murders. Women committing suicide to free themselves from a world of torment. Mothers killing their babies to prevent them from being born into a world of slavery. Slaves resisted self-definition of “slaves” by creating family. It gave slaves dignity, although it was something slave owners sought to stifle. In some instances, it gave the slaves a feeling of independence and families were split up in certain states to control the dehumanization of slaves. Families would protest peacefully through prayer, waiting for the Lord to free them, with prayers answers after the war. Many slaves sought to steal food to survive on the plantation. One instance of a slave in the night killing off hogs and blaming disease in order to feed the community. I particularly enjoyed reading of the act’s slaves used as a sort of escape and evasion tactic. Using graveyard dust and lightwood splinters they would smoke their feet to confuse the purpose bred “nigger hounds” from finding them as they escaped. If there weren’t high levels of dehumanization and demoralization of slaves during the time, slaves being quite crafty may have fought back sooner. As Felix Haywood said “If every mother’s son of a black had thrown ‘way his hoe and took up a gun to fight for his own freedom along with the Yankees, the war’d been over before it began.”

Leadership Case Problem A

Ashley Wants to Boost Teamwork

Ashley considered herself fortunate to be chosen as the team leader for one of the newly formed teams at the insurance company where she worked. The purpose of forming teams was to improve customer service. Each team now had the authority to issue policies and settle claims, within limits, for specific geographic regions. Before the shift into teams, separate departments existed for sales, underwriting, and claims. Although the company was profitable, it received too many criticisms about poor service, particularly in the time required to process a claim. Sales representatives within the company contended that the underwriting department took too long to approve and issue policies.

One of Ashley’s first initiatives was to hold frequent in-person meetings to discuss how service was going to be improved. She emphasized to the team that the company had adopted the popular team concept and that teams were empowered to look for ways to improve efficiency. Ashley also emphasized that each team member had more responsibility than under the department structure. Each team member would be doing some sales, underwriting, and claims.

Team member George commented during one of the meetings, “Just think of it, three jobs in one and being paid just the same as before.” During the same meeting, team member Roz asked, “What’s so special about calling us a team? I had a nice job in the underwriting department before these teams were formed. I enjoyed that work. Now my job is more confusing.”

Ashley responded, “The company decided this was the way to go. Trust me, everything will work out fine. Just go along with the team idea for now.”

Four months after the teams were formed, Ashley’s boss, James, met with her to discuss progress. James said, “Your team isn’t making as much progress as I would like. Policies are not being issued any faster. Customer complaints about slow claims settlements are at the same level as before we converted into teams. The other teams are making more progress. Does your team have a problem

“We do have a problem,” said Ashley. “Everyone comes to work just as in the days before teams. They do most of the work alone, but they send e-mail messages to each other as needed. It just seems to be business as usual. So far, the idea of a high-producing team hasn’t caught on.”

“I think I am,” said Ashley. “I do everything I’m supposed to. I hold meetings, I post messages. I answer all questions asked of me. I try to settle problems.”

Using paragraph format, practice your paraphrasing and putting the articles “in conversation” with each other as demonstrated in this week’s video on your assignment (found on the main course page) and the page regarding the note on paraphrasing.  You should paraphrase while also writing about something. How do the articles link? What do they have to say in relation to each other? What is your interpretation of the story these articles tell together?

You should only need one to two sentences per article, focusing on their major points and how they interact (is there agreement? Disagreement?). That will make your assignment approximately 1/2 to 1 page in length.

Discussion #4 is in 2 parts and asks you to write thoughtful substantive comments, using your own words and your own ideas, related to concepts in Ch. 3 and Module #3 on Perception and Communication.
