Saint Leo University Quality Services Paper

Description

(Kaleb)As the regional manager for CUI or Commercial Uniform Inc., Derrick oversees numerous facets of the business. CUI is a company that provides not only uniforms for businesses such as banks, hotels, and rental agencies, but they also provide dry cleaning as well as pick up and drop off services for the uniforms. The drivers that pick up and drop off the dry cleaning, both to and from the places of business as well as to and from the dry cleaners, are CUI’s bread and butter, the heart and soul of the company.

Recently though, the market for such services has diminished due to companies opting to allow their employees to utilize their own wardrobes within the companies standards as well as become more crowded as more competition emerges, therefore not allowing for drivers salaries to increase for allowing for bonuses. Madison, head of HR, along with the CEO of the company, agree that personal recognition could keep morale up in spite of stagnant wages and declining business. Over the next few days, Derrick makes a point to compliment individuals on their work and impact on the company; some are more specific and thought out, while others are more generic and not individualized.

How well is Derrick praising his workers? What advice can you offer him to be more effective in her praise?

With some workers, Derrick is doing exceedingly well, such as Courtney and Hector, while others consist of a more generic nature that could be used as a blanket commemoration. If Derrick sincerely wanted to make others in the company be appreciated and vital to the company, he should take the time to learn their names, what their individual job is, figure out one thing they really worked hard on, and complement that. Everyone works hard even if those at the top do not see it, and they all deserve proper recognition.

  1. Which statement of praise do you think was the most effective, and why?

Derrick’s comments towards Courtney were the most specified. He addressed her by name, stated what action she performed that was vital to the company, and accentuated that without her efforts, the company would have gone belly up. Whether or not the “shut down” part of his comment was genuine or not is unknown, but even if it was not, it made that employee feel like they are a necessary and vital part of the company.

Which statement of praise do you think was the least effective, and why?

  1. The comment Kaitlin received was generic and even a little, if not condescending, then off-putting. Derrick did not address her by name, did not mention her job or any specific work she had done to warrant any type of remark or comment and the part “with a cool and talented woman” just seems out of place and slightly unprofessional. Her reaction would be the same many other employees would probably give if complimented out of the blue.

Image Cloud Essay

Description

The goal of these “Image Cloud” exercises is to get you to “think inimages”. What we want you to do is to look at an advertisement and “see”other images that relate to it in one way or another. This can beliteral, and it can also be more subjective…Meaning, it can be a“feeling” that another image relates to the advertisement outside ofitself, and you just “know” it should be in relation to that particularadvertisement. Also, this can be related to ANY element within theselected ad (language cues, image cues, etc).

Hopefully theseexercises will help you to look at advertisements from various timeperiods in a unique way, and also perhaps shed new light on what’s goingon “within” the advertisement from a deeper cultural perspective.

1) Chose ONE image to analyze from the three provided, below.

2)Brainstorm a word/pharase list related to the image: write downwhatever comes to mind regarding the advertisement. What do you see? What don’t you see? What are the shapes? Colors? Messages? Objects?Symbols? What is it trying to “say”? What creative materials and formsare used within the image (mostly photography? Illustration?), etc…Letyour mind wander…FOR THIS PART, you will turn it in as a TEXT ENTRYwithin the Assignment window (i.e., you don’t have to attach it as aseparate file).

Break this “brainstorm” down into these components:

A) The “Literal Message(s)”

i) What are the literal, obvious things that are in the image? Do a direct, literal description of what is in the ad

B) The “Linguistic Message” – If there is text in the ad, evaluate it by discussing:

i)“Denoted” text: What are the linguistic messages (tag lines, other textin the ad, etc) that are obvious that are in the advertisement (ifany…some ads many not have a lot of words in the them, or any).

ii)“Connoted” text: What are the messages in the text that are inferred?Meaning, what might the “hidden” messages be within the printed text? What are the words trying to say if it is not direct?

C) The “Symbolic Message(s)”

i)Find the signs or symbols that are within the Image (rather than thetext). What are the NON-verbal (non-linguistic) parts of the message theadvertisement is trying to show you? What does the “art” part of the ad(the illustration, the photograph, etc) say without using words? Justdo your best to come up with things to find and talk about here!

Refer back to the image and description in the link we saw last week about Barthes for help:

https://tracesofthereal.com/2009/12/21/the-rhetoric-of-the-image-roland-barthes-1977/

3) Now, start Googling for images using your word and phrase list from the Brainstorm above.

4) Open up GIMP and start creating your Image Cloud…and have fun! 🙂 Upload your finished JPEG file to this Assignment page(NOTthe original, saved GIMP file on your computer! As per the GIMPTraining Video, FIRST save your Image Cloud collage as a GIMP file withlayers, THEN “merge” all the Layers, THEN “Export As” as a JPEG format,THEN close GIMP (you can “Discard” any changes if it asks if you want tosave them) once you are finished.

Home Schooling Annotated Bibliography

Description

TOPIC : Homeschooling
In our country, there are three options for pre-college education: public school, private school, and homeschooling. There are passionate proponents for all. Consider the homeschooling option. Evaluate the pros and cons and argue for or against homeschooling as a viable alternative to public or private education.

So what does it mean to annotate something though? Simply put, if you annotate something, you explain it more fully. It can involve analysis, summary, or commentary (or all three). That’s it. So an annotated bibliography is a collection of sources where you add an annotation to each of the sources. With that annotation, you will explain what the source says, what its strengths (and weaknesses) seem to be, and how you might use it in your research paper.

For your annotated bibliography, you’ll follow the following criteria:

This is probably obvious, but you’ll use MLA format for the document design and entry formatting. I don’t care if you use a resource like Easy Bib or the like. That’s fine. But the final product needs to be accurate. This isn’t rocket science. You just have to pay attention to details. All formatting styles, including MLA, have a precise way to format titles, for example, as well as how to list all the information about the source, such as the page numbers, publisher information, etc. The Purdue Online Writing Lab (or “OWL”) has some really helpful information about formatting sources for MLA. Again, though, I don’t mind if you use a site like Easy Bib or something similar.

Each entry needs to be between 100 – 150 words.

This is super important. Do not copy the information from the database’s description of the source or the source yourself. It needs to be in your own words. You’ll write a brief summary of the source (really, just a sentence or two) and offer a preliminary evaluation of the source’s value. You can also write about you might use it your paper.

The sources can come from your Working Bibliography, but they don’t have to if you want to keep looking for sources.

You need to have five sources for your annotated bibliography, and they need to fulfill the following criteria: at least three scholarly articles (peer-reviewed sources, not web pages); no more than two books (either print or ebook is fine), and no more than one quality web-based source (e.g., a web page from an .edu site – sites like Wikipedia, Spark Notes, or the like are not allowed). If you want, you can replace the web-based source with another scholarly article or quality book.

You will not be forced to use these exact sources for your paper, if you end up refining your idea. But just for the record, the final draft of your research paper must meet the criteria for sources mentioned in the previous step.

Annotated bibliographies need to be prepared with the same care you would a formal essay. Proofread your annotations carefully.

Leadership Case Problem A

Ashley Wants to Boost Teamwork

Ashley considered herself fortunate to be chosen as the team leader for one of the newly formed teams at the insurance company where she worked. The purpose of forming teams was to improve customer service. Each team now had the authority to issue policies and settle claims, within limits, for specific geographic regions. Before the shift into teams, separate departments existed for sales, underwriting, and claims. Although the company was profitable, it received too many criticisms about poor service, particularly in the time required to process a claim. Sales representatives within the company contended that the underwriting department took too long to approve and issue policies.

One of Ashley’s first initiatives was to hold frequent in-person meetings to discuss how service was going to be improved. She emphasized to the team that the company had adopted the popular team concept and that teams were empowered to look for ways to improve efficiency. Ashley also emphasized that each team member had more responsibility than under the department structure. Each team member would be doing some sales, underwriting, and claims.

Team member George commented during one of the meetings, “Just think of it, three jobs in one and being paid just the same as before.” During the same meeting, team member Roz asked, “What’s so special about calling us a team? I had a nice job in the underwriting department before these teams were formed. I enjoyed that work. Now my job is more confusing.”

Ashley responded, “The company decided this was the way to go. Trust me, everything will work out fine. Just go along with the team idea for now.”

Four months after the teams were formed, Ashley’s boss, James, met with her to discuss progress. James said, “Your team isn’t making as much progress as I would like. Policies are not being issued any faster. Customer complaints about slow claims settlements are at the same level as before we converted into teams. The other teams are making more progress. Does your team have a problem

“We do have a problem,” said Ashley. “Everyone comes to work just as in the days before teams. They do most of the work alone, but they send e-mail messages to each other as needed. It just seems to be business as usual. So far, the idea of a high-producing team hasn’t caught on.”

“Are you an effective team leader?” asked James.

“I think I am,” said Ashley. “I do everything I’m supposed to. I hold meetings, I post messages. I answer all questions asked of me. I try to settle problems.”

“I’ll be back to you in two months to discuss your team’s progress. I want to see some improved results in terms of better customer service.

Case Questions

How can Ashley be a more effective team leader?

What can Ashley do to get her team more interested in functioning as a team?

Based on whatever information you have found in the case, what is your evaluation of Ashley’s charisma’s

CTM11 SEU Strategic Analysis Case Study

Description

Corporate diversification strategies raise a wide range of strategic management issues. For this week’s critical thinking assignment, read the case study found in your textbook: Case 16: Manchester City: Building a Multinational Soccer Enterprise, p.554 (in the textbook).

Remember, a case study is a puzzle to be solved, so before reading and answering the specific case and study questions, develop your proposed solution by following these five steps:

  1. Read the case study to identify the key issues and underlying issues. These issues are the principles and concepts of the course module, which apply to the situation described in the case study.
  2. Record the facts from the case study which are relevant to the principles and concepts of the module. The case may have extraneous information not relevant to the current module. Your ability to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information is an important aspect of case analysis, as it will inform the focus of your answers.
  3. Describe in some detail the actions that would address or correct the situation.
  4. Consider how you would support your solution with examples from experience or current real-life examples or cases from textbooks.
  5. Complete this initial analysis and then read the discussion questions. Typically, you will already have the answers to the questions but with a broader consideration. At this point, you can add the details and/or analytical tools required to solve the case.

Case Study Questions:

  1. Under what circumstances can a company extend its competitive advantage from its home market to an overseas market? Issues concerning the transferability and replicability of the firm’s competitive advantage are critical here.
  2. What are the distinctive features of City Football’s strategy? What mode of foreign market entry should City Football adopt? Why? Again, issues of resources and capabilities and the need for local market knowledge, distribution, and political and business connections become critical here.
  3. What criteria can companies apply in deciding what new diversification to pursue and which should City Football apply in deciding?
  4. What changes in the financial structure, organizational structure and management systems would you recommend?

Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Description

MA #2: Rhetorical Analysis Instructions

PurposeAmericans are constantly bombarded by political rhetoric, particularly during election years. Presidential elections are hotly disputed. We still have many examples of political campaigning fresh in our memories. Much of this rhetoric seems empty and meaningless; what does it mean to say that “I’m for America,” or “I’m running on a platform of family values?” The purpose of this project is to help you learn about political rhetoric. You will learn to identify the different types of appeals, analyze political jargon, and consider how politicians use rhetoric to influence voters. A good understanding of political rhetoric is an absolute necessity for citizens in a democracy.

This project is designed to help you learn about classical and modern rhetorical concepts like the three appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos), audience, and identification.

Many of the artists you are listening to this week were influenced by jazz. This was a departure of sorts from some of the other musical reference points of other hip-hop artists. Discuss a contemporary artist (in any genre) who you think has been influenced by what might be considered an unusual source of inspiration (an example may be a country artist who is influenced by classical music).  Describe—in an original post of 200 words minimum—the influence in the particular artist you choose. If possible, include a link to a song by your chosen artists that exemplifies the influence you describe.
