PVC Choking the Oceans with Plastic Discussion

Description

Each journal should fully answer the provided prompt and consist of a minimum of one typed page, no more than two (double the page requirement if handwritten). All journals must be formatted to MLA guidelines. You must include specific examples and details from the text to support your ideas and claims in each journal. In-text citations and a Works Cited page must be included with each journal. Please do not compose a full-length essay.

Journal 17: So What? Who Cares? (Chapter 7) In his article, “Choking the Oceans with Plastic,” how does Moore make clear to his readers why his topic matters? Or, if you don’t think he does, how might he do so?

Journal 18: The article, “Should We Be More Optimistic about Fighting Climate Change,” by Chen and Murthy describes a number of climate-related disasters that would seem to offer strong reasons or pessimism, but the authors believe that an “optimistic” narrative about fighting climate change needs to be told more often. Why do you think they are so adamant about the importance of staying optimistic that the problems they discuss can be solved? In your view, is this an effective way to persuade an audience to work “together with as much speed and thoughtfulness as we can”? (paragraph 20). Why or why not?

Journal 19: In her article, “We Are the Wildfire,” Naomi Klein discusses her beliefs that countries throughout the world must work together to combat the climate change crisis. She begins her essay with examples of student protests, followed by descriptions of cyclones in Africa caused by climate change, before presenting her own arguments in subsequent paragraphs. How would you summarize her “they say” and “I say” arguments? Does she make a convincing argument? Why or why not?

Journal 20: In his essay, “It’s Time for Conservatives to Own the Climate-Change Issue,” Dan Crenshaw accuses liberals of “alarmism” in their calls to combat climate change. He says in paragraph 2 that conservatives can fight back with solutions “based on reason, science, and the free market.” Read through the essay again and consider how effectively he uses these three categories, particularly science, in proposing conservative solutions.

American University of Science and Technology Family Feud by Mark Miller Discussion

Description

Read the short essay Family Feud from the book Boxed In by Mark Crispin Miller and respond to the prompt below.

PROMPT: We are all accustomed to watching game shows and not reflecting on what they might say about the world we inhabit. Consider Miller’s description of the game, the participants, and the host. Provide a brief characterization of what he believes the game reveals about Americans and their worldview. Make sure that you provide evidence for your characterization by identifying the source of your characterization from the article. Remember that you are characterizing his view, not your own.[1]

Taking into consideration the Lippmann reading and class presentations, what does Miller believe are the pictures inside the heads of the players and what is the nature of the pseudo-environment (i.e, the crafted world interposed between us and the natural world, which the players, representative of Americans more generally, inhabit)?

This exercise requires doing something that Lippmann correctly regards as difficult, namely, seeing past the daily world we occupy, since it seems so natural that there is nothing to question:

“In all we must note particularly one common factor. It is the insertion between man and the environment of a pseudo-environment. To that pseudo-environment his behavior is a response. But because it is behavior, the consequences, if they are acts, operate not in the pseudo-environment where the behavior is stimulated, but in the real environment where the action eventuates. (Lippmann 1922:10).

In sum, what does Miller believe are the “pictures in our head” and how does the game he describes give us insight into the world and the minds that the pictures reflect? In other words, what can we tell about the worlds and goals the contestants occupy and, by extension, what might that tell us about ourselves?

To have fun (and possibly be shocked by your beliefs), please visit Project Implicit at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/ (Links to an external site.). This is a site that you can explore on your own. It will give you a every good sense of the nature and pervasiveness of stereotyping. Visiting the website will enhance your understanding of what we’ve discussed this week, but you do not have to write anything about experience.

Patient-Centered   Care: Allows patient   to be the source of control

I practice from the assumption that I as the nurse know   what is best for the patient. I also assume that if I give up control, the   patient will take advantage. I realize these are not valid assumptions as   expanded knowledge and reflection this semester has allowed me to understand…

I   will begin working on this way of thinking and change my behaviors to reflect   the behavioral competency with this core competency domain immediately. I   will start by allowing my patients to decide when…

Critical   self-reflection

Seeking   evidence to inform practice

Over   the past 3 months I have consciously included this behavior into my nursing   care. I use critical reflection after patient situations to ensure I am   demonstrating the behavior in my practice.

The Impact of Russian Influence in the Arctic Essay

Description

a research summary. It is a counter argument paper requires good writing skills for every topic you need to write counter argument of 5 pages. Please do read instructions carefully on file. The feedback is attached below. 10 pages has been written. Please be careful with the feedback and I need a proper response according to this feedback below. I will provide the paper once I accept the bid.

Comments from Professor

There is a lot of very useful information in this paper and it contains a very good topic. But it is poorly organized and will need to be rearranged and rewritten for inclusion in the final paper. The main topic of the paper is that environmental changes affecting the Arctic—especially climate change—create both opportunities and threats for Russia. The opportunities are mainly economic due to the resulting access to more natural resources and more year-round transportation using the Northern Sea Route. Once you state that, you can systematically explain each one. The main threats are strategic and environmental. The thawing of the Arctic can make it vulnerable to incursions by Russia’s neighbors and a more valuable asset that Russia feels it needs to defend militarily. And the increased economic and military activities will affect ecological and human health in the region. You have most of the information you need to do this, you just need to organize it more logically.

The real focus of the paper—your actual case study–is Basic Principles of the Russian Federation policy in the Arctic to 2035. Expand and reorganize your description to show how this policy initiative is designed to take advantage of environmental change in the Arctic but is also likely to make the environmental situation worse. You can also discuss Russian plans to use the Arctic Council as a way to assert its interests in the region.

For your literature review look for sources on “environmental security.” Most of that literature looks (generally and specifically) at how environmental changes (especially global warming) increase insecurity within and among states. Once you see what scholars say about that you can see if it applies to your findings.

GC Case Scientific Turmoil Discussion

Description

CASE: SCIENTIFIC TURMOIL

PART ONE

Joan is the director of scientific computing at a large utility company. The people she supervises are all college graduated with backgrounds in science, engineering, or math. These people do systems work and computer programming that is more problem-oriented than other programmers in the company and the people in Joan’s department are quite close knit

Joan hired Fred into the group from the Engineering Department. Fred, who had worked for the company for seven years, learned the programming easily and was doing quite well. One year later Bob was hired into the group by Joan. Bob and Fred both assimilated into the group quickly.

About a month later, Joan’s problems began. Information was quite freely shared by members of the group, especially job-related information such as salary. When Fred learned that Bob was making more money than he was, he was quite upset. Bob was doing the same kind of work with less experience at his new job. He also had had less total working time with the computer only four years.

When Fred voiced his concern to his boss, he was told that the company had specific guidelines for raises and wide salary ranges for each job level. Bob was just on the high sides of his old job’s salary range and received a hefty raise when he was promoted to this new job. Fred was not pleased with the setup because he had received a raise just before Bob came and knew that it would be a year before he would get another one. In Fred’s mind, he was now qualified, more experienced, had better knowledge of the company, and if nothing else, more seniority than Bob. Fred’s attitude and discontent was apparent in his work, and although Joan could not really prove it, Fred caused serious delays in projects. Also, new errors seemed to be cropping up in the computer programs that came out of Joan’s section.

1) Give five factors that may contribute to the difference in pay between Fred and Bob.

PART TWO

1) Identify and explain two employer rights/responsibilities and three employee right

Kaplan University Styles of Leadership Discussion

Description

Part 1

Styles of Leadership

You were recently hired to manage a team at a manufacturing company located in the U.S.A. The team is made up of four individuals who are from the “baby boomer” generation, and one individual, Trevor, who is from the “millennial” generation. Trevor says that the main problem with this organization is that the organization is not run like it is in the 21st century. He says the policies are outdated and the previous manager was always asking him questions such as:

  • “What do you mean you don’t want to input data from the office and you want more flexibility, such as more time working from home?”
  • “You think you are ready to lead a team?”
  • “Where’s your tie?

Trevor has been performing at an average level but says he could take his performance up a level if leadership was more responsive to his suggestions. Another team member expressed concerns about Trevor, saying that he always wants special treatment. You want to start off in a strong way with Trevor and the whole team.

  • What are two leadership styles you might try in working with Trevor, and what might be the strengths and limits of each leadership style?
  • How important is it to adapt one’s style when leading?

Cite at least two primary sources from psychological research journal articles or other scholarly resources to explore this topic of discussion. Use the textbook only for context, or as a jumping-off point.

Part 2

Leadership Within a Cultural Context

Identify a leadership situation in which there was a lack of diversity awareness or cross-cultural competence. Discuss the following:

  • What behaviors were evident?
  • Were any of the GLOBE study cultural dimensions involved? If so, which ones? (For example, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, collectivism, gender egalitarianism, future orientation, humane orientation, and so on.)
  • Which of the suggestions provided in course readings or in your research this week might be useful in considering ways to enhance the leader’s capacity to work within the cultural context of the situation you identified?

Cite at least two primary sources from psychological research journal articles or other scholarly resources to explore this topic of discussion. Use the textbook only for context, or a jumping-off point.
