CSUN Thelma and Louise 1991 Discussion

Description

Discussion 13 – Thelma and Louise (1991)

Director

Ridley Scott

Genre

Adventure/Crime

Themes

Sexism

Female friendship

”Thelma and follows the time-honored tradition of other road movies such as ”Bonnie and Clyde” and ”Easy Rider” but with a major difference: The story is told from a woman`s point of view.

Callie Khouri, who wrote the screenplay in six months in 1988, insists that she had no feminist agenda. She simply wanted to tell a good story that featured strong female characters.

More than any other film we have discussed, then, Thelma & Louise has been adopted in the popular and scholarly literature as a touchstone for discussion, on topics ranging from feminism and pornography to law and ethics to travel and tourism. As Harvey Greenberg writes in his introduction to the 1992 Film Quarterly collection of essays on the film, Thelma & Louise is an “exuberant…highly polysemic text.”

In sum, Thelma & Louise has been viewed and analyzed as:

  • A Road Movie (a particularly American film type, by the way)
  • A Buddy Film
  • A “Lovers on the Run” Film
  • A Female Revenge Film
  • A Melodrama (what used to be called a “Women’s Film”)
  • A Fairy Tale
  • A Screwball Comedy
  • A [Dark] Comedy (as referenced by director Ridley Scott)
  • A Western
  • (Specifically) An Outlaw Western
  • A Text for Legal or Ethical Analysis
  • A Text for Analyses of Representations (of Women, of Hillbillies, of Travel, etc.)
  • An Excellent Example of Screenplay Writing

The iconic final shot of the film is a freeze?frame, reminiscent of final freeze?frames in both Francois Truffaut’s The 400 Blows (1959) and George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).

What does this mean, do you think? An alternative ending was shot and edited, which shows the car falling far into the canyon, and then returns to Hal and the officers looking out over the canyon. How would this alternate ending have changed the meaning of the film?

NVCC Communications Shadowland Film Essay

Description

Directions

Your essay should include the following:

Introduction: In the introduction you should briefly describe the film you have chosen and specifically the relationship(s) in the film that you will be analyzing. Preview the main points of the paper (which theories or model you will be using to analyze the film) and the role that communication generally played in the success or failure of this relationship.

Choose one of the theories (or model) of relational development from Chapter 8, briefly describe the theory/model and discuss how your film illustrates the ideas from this theory or model. Provide examples from the film (describe a scene and/or use short excerpts of dialogue) to illustrate your points. Explain why you think this theory best explains the way the relationship developed. Theories from this chapter include:

  1. Attraction Theory

Uncertainty Reduction Theory

  1. Social Penetration Theory

Knapp’s Stage Model of Relational Development

Choose one of the theories of relational maintenance from Chapter 9 and discuss how your film illustrates the theory. In this section of the paper, you should describe the theory briefly and show how the theory you have chosen best explains the way the characters in the film maintain (or do not maintain) the relationship, using examples from the film to illustrate your argument. Theories from this chapter include:

Social Exchange Theory

Communication Privacy Management Theory

  • Everyday Talk
  • Relational Dialectics
  • Conclusion: Briefly summarize the main points of your paper and explain how these theories provided some insight into the role of communication in the development and maintenance of the relationship(s) you examined in the film.
  • You may choose any film you like but keep in mind that some films (like action movies) may not have a lot of dialogue between characters and would limit your ability for analysis. Some films that might be better for this assignment and are available for free include:
  • Spanglish (2004)
  • La La Land (2016)
  1. Othello (1995)

Shadowlands (1993)

  1. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons(2008)

University of Southern California Periods in Music History Essay

Description

You will write a total of 600 words, in 12 point, Times New Roman font. The project needs to be double-spaced, including 4 pictures, and 6 properly formed citations. (It is okay to use a citation creator website to help you. Just listing websites is not the proper way to cite reference works). Use of wikipedia is not allowed, as it is not considered a proper academic website. Any links I have provided this term are excellent references, as are websites like encyclopediabrittanica.com, or history.com, etc. You should include at least 6 citations (each period should have at least one citation), on a works cited page at the back of the project. 600 words is less than 3 pages of typing and will be easy once I break it down for you. You are to write the main points/composers/contributions of each of the following periods in music history: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and early American music, particularly Ragtime and Early Jazz. In other words, about 100 words per required musical period). Trust me, there is MORE than enough to do this very easily, especially when you add key composers from the period. I did this so the project might be worked on in stages. I do remember being a student, and I would not have stressed so much over a project, rather than a paper. If there is ANY trouble at all, PLEASE write me. If you would prefer to do a slideshow, all of the same requirements will apply. The paper does not have to necessarily “flow” from period to period, and in fact, there can be 4 line spacings between each musical period in order to make it a bit easier. I am not looking for bullet points, and do want complete sentences, and each picture should have a caption

Again you can write the assignment or a slideshow.Either or is fine

Miami Dade College Nursing Communication Discussion

Description

Hello class,

The study found that most nursing communication occurs in the clinician as a person, the patient as a person, and the biopsychosocial information exchange. In the area of therapeutic alliance domain, nurses had few communication interactions. However, they endorsed the usefulness of responsibility and shared power. The nurses’ roles as translators of information among families, patients, and physicians strongly influenced their communication behaviors (Yoo et al., 2020). This involved what medical practitioners were willing to communicate to the families and patients and what they were unwilling to communicate (Slatore et al., 2012). It was also found that it requires collaborative effort to make communication a critical care success. Additionally, the study found that a guide to future interventions in improving patient-centered care can be obtained from understanding how nurses engage in patient-centered communication in the ICU. The indication of the study has it that critical care nurses should improve their communication skills continuously to aid patient care.

I will apply several communication skills discussed in the study, such as open-ended questions to elicit the patient’s agenda, especially early on admission. I have also learned to let the patient express themselves without interruption and have focused on active listening skills. From the study, I will make sure I understand the patient’s perspective towards the illness and show them empathy.

I got empowered to empower patients towards becoming active participants in their care. The use of quantitative analysis in this study created a wider understanding of behavior which was the core objective of the study. It helped in the provision of abundant data the need for effective communication. This method helped to analyze information conveyed by the participants through behavior and language in a natural setting (Ahmed et al. 2019).

EDP 310 Arizona State University Attribution Theory and Mindset Theory Discussion

Description

Interpret one of the story lines using both attribution theory and mindset theory.PurposeLearning activities provide a low-stakes opportunity for students to engage deeply in the learning content.Requirement(s)Generate a 300-400 word statement or 3-4 minute video summary.AssessmentRubric

Overview

Pick one of the two following story lines (i.e., either the animated video or the comic) and interpret it using both attribution theory and mindset theory:

Animated Video: Soar

Comic: Pearls Before Swine

"The large train needed to be pulled over the mountain. 'We cannot do it,' said the big engines, 'It is too hard.' 'I will do it,' volunteered the tiniest train in the train yard. The larger trains laughed at the tiny train. 'You cannot do it,' they said. 'I can try my best,' said the tiny train. So the tiny train pulled and pulled with all his might and soon the large train started to move. The other trains were amazed. 'I think I can. I think I can,' said the tiny train to himself as he slowly moved up the mountain pulling his large load. 'I know I can! I know I can!' shouted the tiny train as he reached the summit. Then a massive landslide destroyed the train." Goat: You are not putting this in a children's book. Rat: 'So remember, kids, luck and timing are much more important than personal effort.' Pig: I will never try again.

Details

Whichever option you choose, you will need to speculate given the evidence available to you and explain your reasoning (i.e., “I think xx character would have had a fixed mindset and an internal attribution because…, then when they were faced with xxx it looks like it changed. Something that might have contributed to this change is…”). The purpose of this activity is to get you thinking about what these concepts might look like, not whether you can explain the meaning of the video or the joke in the comic.

Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Affirmative Action Discussion

Description

part one

Introduction

Opponents of affirmative action cite several reasons for opposing it. Affirmative action, they say, is reverse discrimination and, as such, is both illegal and immoral. The people benefiting from affirmative action are less qualified than many of the whites with whom they compete for employment and college admissions. In addition, opponents say, affirmative action implies that the people benefiting from it need extra help and thus are indeed less qualified. This implication stigmatizes the groups benefiting from affirmative action.

Your Tasks

Task 1 – Original Post

Please answer the following questions given the above introduction and what we have learned about affirmative action:

  1. Do you agree with the tenets of affirmative action? Explain why or why not. 8 points
