1. Describe the natural features of Saudi Arabia (what is the climate like; what are the average summer and winter temperatures; what is the highest and lowest point in Saudi Arabia ; are there common geological hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, typhoons, etc.)  

2. What natural, physical resources are abundant in Saudi Arabia  (soil, water, forests, species diversity)?

3. Is their soil productive? Do they have a soil issues (ie: degradation, not enough crop land for the population, etc)? 

4. What are their water resources? How are their surface and ground water supplies? Do they have concerns with their water resources (drought, irrigation concerns, lack of freshwater, etc.)? 

5. How rich is their biodiversity? Do they have forest resources? Have they seen declines in diversity across the species? If so, which species have become more vulnerable? 

6.What mining or energy resources does Saudi Arabia have? How are they harvested/utilized? Are there subsidies for these resources? 

7. What is the environmental history of Saudi Arabia? Have there been major environmental disasters, either natural or man-made? What were the causes and how were these disasters handled? Have there been long-term problems from these disasters? 

8. What environmental policies does Saudi Arabia have? What is the history of the creation of these policies (i.e.: spurred by disaster, reaction to research, local problems, etc.)? How are they enforced? If Saudi Arabia does not have environmental policies, what environmental problems or concerns does the lack of environmental policies cause or aggravate?

9. Has Saudi Arabia undergone any ecological modernizations?

10. What environmental concerns currently face Saudi Arabia? Why are these concerns? How is Saudi Arabia dealing with them?

11. What “green technology” does Saudi Arabia utilize? Are renewable energy sources commonly in use in Saudi Arabia? Are recycling programs or other aspects of environmentalism common? 

12. What pollution problems does Saudi Arabia face? Where do these problems come from? How are they being addressed? Who do they most affect in Saudi Arabia? How?

Using the primary texts supplied, choose two pro-slavery and two anti-slavery documents and write a 750-word essay that examines how the proponents and opponents of slavery used the analytical concepts that framed this course when making their arguments (Mobility, Democracy, Capitalism, and Difference). You should identify the authors’ main point, and utilizing two of the four concepts, examine how they defended their positions. Your paper should conclude by explaining why some contemporaries of slavery may have found certain arguments compelling, while others found them offensive (to conclude effectively, you will need to explain the historical context in which these texts were written, based on what you have read in the U.S. History text and learned in class discussion).

Please note that the proslavery texts reflect the racism found in many quarters of nineteenth-century America. As historians, it is only right that we reject these views as we analyze how these writers constructed their defense of slavery. Other researchers have noted that the proslavery appeal to racism was intended to undermine the Abolitionist efforts to put forth “all men are created equal” as the core American value (see the antislavery texts). Please beware that the level of racism seen in these documents can be shocking and disturbing to modern readers.

I want to make one aspect of this assignment very clear. YOU ARE NOT ARGUING FOR OR AGAINST SLAVERY. Rather, this assignment is a document analysis. Your job, as the author of a signature assignment, is to IDENTIFY AND EXPLAIN the arguments being made in the primary sources discussing slavery. As this is a survey-level history class, we are concerned with historical views on the institution of slavery when it was a major point of contention in American society and politics in the 1800s, not modern views of slavery.

No secondary sources, other than the U.S. History text, should be integrated into this paper’s analysis.

Mrs MC, a 53-year-old woman presents with symptoms of irritability, low mood and feeling that she cannot cope. She has been experiencing these symptoms for the past month, but has been reluctant to bother the nurse about them. She has been experiencing family problems with her husband and children for the last several months. She has asthma, but she denies that this is problematic at the moment.
