Essay 1: Thesis-Driven Comparison and Contrast Essay

PROMPT: In an essay of at least 750 words, construct an insightful argument that employs comparison and contrast. Your argument should be about a choice you’ve made between two majors or careers. You should choose one option over the other based on a clear standard or standards.

In other words:

Compare and contrast two majors — one that you chose not to study and one that you did

Compare and contrast careers that you’ve considered — which one did you choose (or which one do you prefer right now)?

In writing this essay, you will:

Demonstrate analytical skills

• Construct an appropriately sophisticated thesis-driven essay

Understand how to utilize pre-writing and revising techniques

• Explore a topic that’s potentially significant in your life
