History Discussion

After reading the textbook and watching the videos, think about the several different types of design styles used during the Victorian Era (Gothic Revival, Italianate or Renaissance Revival, Second Empire or Rococo Revival, Exoticism, Stick Style or Queen Anne). Victorians tended to collect several different styles within their homes. Meaning, there might be a Rococo Revival parlor next to a Exotic style dining room.

Keeping this in mind, and making reference to your textbook readings, answer the following questions:

1. If you lived during this period, which style would you use for a room in your home?
2. Identify the room (e.g. library, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, games room, parlor, etc.)
3. Using appropriate terminology, describe the room decor and contents
4. Explain why you selected the style for that particular space

***N.B. This question is asking you to describe how you would design a period room, not a contemporary interpretation of a period style.
