LAVC Linear Equation Math Problems

Question Description

I’m working on a algebra writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

1) A Linear Equation is a rule that assigns to each number x on the x-axis exactly one number y on the y – axis so that the ordered pairs (x,y) form a line. We call y the Dependent Variable and we call x the Independent Variable because the value assigned to y by the linear equation will depend on the value selected for x.

Now consider this scenario: we can burn 4 calories by walking 100 steps. The linear equation modeling this scenario is C=0.04*S where C is the dependent variable and S is the independent variable. Here, C represents calories burned for some number of steps S walked.

You will create a new linear model that shows the amount of calories burned in a given day during some activity you choose, compensating for food intake. Produce a model with a reasonable rate of calorie burn for walking, running, or some other activity, and account for a daily calorie intake between 1200 and 3000 calories. Be sure to describe the detailed scenario for which your equation models. Conclude your post by rewording the following questions to fit your scenario:

1) How many calories have been burned after 1 typical session of activity?

2) How much activity does it take to burn all the calories eaten in one day?

2)x3 times x2 is not equal to x6. Why not? What is it? Please write a new exponent rule problem for others to solve – try to make a problem that requires different exponent rules to solve.

You can type exponential expressions and fractions using Equation tool under Insert in the menu bar.

3) In the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, upon being presented with a Th.D. (Doctor of Thinkology), the Scarecrow proudly exclaims, “The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side.” Analyze the statement made by the Scarecrow. Present your analysis and give a complete description of the triangles that satisfy the statement.

Find another example of math being used in:
Movies, television, popular culture, art, music and harmonics, scientific research papers, newspapers or magazine articles, nature and natural phenomena, voting, national security, manufacturing, logistics, transportation, healthcare, business, economics, or some noteworthy or pivotal historical moment.

Research and explain whether or not the math was used correctly.

For initial post, please respond to this week’s discussion prompt. You must

  1. analyze the statement made by the Scarecrow and
  2. find another example of math being used in movies, art, etc.

Here is my example of math being used in a movie.

In the 2001 movie A Beautiful Mind, John Nash Jr, a mathematical genius uses a Game Theory concept to analyze a certain situation happening at the bar and introduces Nash equilibrium concept. The situation at the bar was well analyzed as a congestion game

4) The solutions of the quadratic equation Ax2+Bx+C=0 are called roots and are given by a famous equation called the Quadratic Formula. In the quadratic formula, the terms B2 – 4AC underneath the radical have a special name: the Discriminant.

Discuss the relationship between the discriminant of a quadratic polynomial and the quantity of real roots it possesses. Explain the positioning of the roots of the polynomial on its graph with respect to the discriminant and the sign of the discriminant.
