Monmouth University Political Images in Three US Presidential Campaigns Analysis
Description
paper should demonstrate your ability
to use the interpretive skills and should pay
close attention to how media forms, symbolism, speech, music and
visual representation create compelling political imagery. The campaign ads are available on the website
www.livingroomcandidate.org run by the Museum of the Moving
Image. The site sorts the ads by election yearclick on a year and
youll have access to thumbnail images of ads for all the presidential
candidates.
The paper should discuss the paired ads from THREE elections:
everyone is required to write on 1964; and then choose one election
from among 1984, 1988 or 1992; and one from either 2008 or 2016.
You must thus discuss SIX ads in all. You may structure the paper as
a chronological survey or organize your arguments thematically.
You must choose your ads for analysis from the following selection:
1964: Little Girl (Daisy) (Johnson)
John Wayne/Symbols (Goldwater)
1984: Prouder, Stronger, Better (Morning in America) (Reagan)
Arms Control 5 (Mondale)
1988: Tank Ride (Bush)
Oval Office (Dukakis)
1992: Journey (Clinton)
Gray Dot (Bush)
2008: Yes We Can (Obama)
Celeb (McCain)
2016: Make America Great Again (Trump)
Yes, We Can (Clinton)
