The essay will be a claim of policy on technology, meaning you will choose a policy, rule or law regarding technology and will argue for one side of it.
* You should mention the counter-argument(s); this helps to make you look objective. While you definitely want to address counter-arguments, you don’t want to give them so much weight that you undermine your own argument. Mention them and then refute them.
* The essay will be five pages; just get to page five. You should use a minimum of three sources.
* Paper must be in MLA format. You can look on Canvas under Modules and you will see a sample paper there as well as a sample Works Cited page. There are also some good websites to get answers to MLA questions; my favorite is probably OWL Purdue; it’s easy to use.
* The essay does not have to be five paragraphs, but that does work for the required length.
* In your introductory paragraph, have something interesting to state about the topic (statistic, quote or specific example) and use that as a lead-in to a CLEAR and DECLARATIVE thesis statement. I should know exactly what your argument is when I finish reading the introduction.
* Each body paragraph should begin with a clear topic sentence followed by strong supporting evidence. Do NOT begin or end body paragraphs with quotes; use your own words.
* Provide specific examples instead of hypotheticals or generalizations.
* ALWAYS cite your sources and do so in MLA format.
* The conclusion should tie the essay together.
