SDSU Art Reflection Discussion

Description

2— Discuss this post and do you agree with it or not and why?The first art appropriation that stood out to me would be Jack Goldstein’s Metro Goldwin Mayer video loop. It was made in 1975 and I remember that during one of my art classes in high school, the video was brought up and played on the projector. I found it interesting at the time because I was expecting there to be the roar but there wasn’t any sound just the motion of the lion roaring. The second appropriation that stood out was Dara Birnbaum’s art piece “Technology/Transformation: Wonder Women” in 1978 – 1979. I grew up reading DC comic books and during this I noticed a lot of art focused on everyone looking and being super human. I feel that appropriation is just the immiations of art and is a huge part of art culture. There is a phrase ‘immatation is the biggest form of flattery” and what is art at it’s base other than an immitation of life. So I don’t mind the appropriation of art, in fact I welcome it. Many things can influence artists to create something and train their skill but eventually they hit a roadblock. I find that appropriation can be a different approach to improving one’s skills and finding a new source of inspiration. On the other hand inappropriate appropriation to me is another artist copying the work of another and attempting to pass it off as their own original work. In research documents, scientist cite work from their peers and I feel that artists are capable enough to a couple notes on this. I do not recall a time that inappropriate appropriation has ever upset me. Something that I would love to see to avoid situations like this would be stopping people from being sensitive about everything that didn’t fit in their version of reality. Nothing is perfect and people need to learn that. Honestly I would love to create a work of art that is super famous and have a reference piece in the background to show it had inspiration.
