The Concept of Gender Equality as A Primary Development Discussion

I’m working on a american studies discussion question and need support to help me learn.

The term sexism was not coined until the 20th century, yet women have been discriminated against in societies since the recording of history in ancient times. Is the treatment of women in African societies, different, but equally important to men, or is it yet another simply case of women receiving fewer rights and privileges as compared to men? Should gender bias in Africa be seen as indigenous to  African cultures or is it a manifestation of interaction with sexist systems in Europe and Asia?
