I’m working on a public health multi-part question and need guidance to help me learn.
Euthanasia (eu=happy; thanasia=death, page 270) originally denoted a painless exit from life. Now it signifies actions taken to hasten death, or the intentional foreshortening of a persons life to spare that person from further suffering. Active euthanasia refers to actions that end a person’s life; passive euthanasia refers to the withholding of treatment that might prolong life. Given the fact that the person dies with either active or passive approaches, there is continuing controversy regarding the importance of the moral and legal difference between active and passive euthanasia. For this week, we will discuss
What is the literal meaning of the term euthanasia, and in what significant way does current usage of this term differ? Distinguish clearly between active and passive euthanasia.
Explain how the term euthanasia acquired powerful negative associations in this century.
How would you help society to deal with both the negative historical heritage attached to euthanasia and the current issue of physician assisted suicide? Be clear and realistic in your suggestion?
