UMGC Euthanasia Ending Life Discussion

I’m working on a public health multi-part question and need guidance to help me learn.

Euthanasia (eu=happy; thanasia=death, page 270) originally denoted a painless exit from life. Now it signifies actions taken to hasten death, or the intentional foreshortening of a person’s life to spare that person from further suffering. Active euthanasia refers to actions that end a person’s life; passive euthanasia refers to the withholding of treatment that might prolong life. Given the fact that the person dies with either active or passive approaches, there is continuing controversy regarding the importance of the moral and legal difference between active and passive euthanasia. What is the literal meaning of the term euthanasia, and in what significant way does current usage of this term differ? Distinguish clearly between active and passive euthanasia.
Explain how the term euthanasia acquired powerful negative associations in this century.
