There is a widespread belief that the purpose of a funeral is to give meaning to an individual’s life. In western society it is often viewed as the time for family and friends to gather and remember the person who has passed away while offering support and comfort to one another. Funerals are sometimes an unpleasant and emotional subject for most people to discuss. Others have suggested that it should be the process whereby each of us puts a period on the sentence of your life. You can do it somberly or you can have fun with it, replacing the period with an exclamation point. As part of the requirement for this course, each student will be required to develop a funeral plan for themselves. The funeral plan will include all of the details of how you would like your funeral to play out. As part of your funeral plans, you will be required to write two eulogies: (1) one that is reflective of your life if you should die today; and (2) one that is reflective of your life if you lived to be 90 years old. Below are some of the things that you should consider for your funeral plans. You should add other things that might be important to you.

  • How do you want your body to be disposed? (e.g. cremation, burial, or entombment)
  • Do you want an open casket viewing?
  • Where do you want your funeral to held (e.g., funeral home, church, or at home)?
  • Do you want flowers or donations?
  • Where do you want your remains (body or ashes) to be laid to rest?
  • Who should be (categories of people) invited to your funeral?
  • Who would not be invited to your funeral?
  • Type of Casket?
  • Which song(s) do you want be played if any and why?
  • Who should read your obituary?
  • How would like the service to go?
  • As part of this assignment each student will also be required to develop a living will. A living will is a document, typically signed in advance while in good health, that specifies the decisions somebody wishes to be taken about his or her medical treatment in the event of becoming incapable of making or communicating them. The deadline for this assignment is April 19, 2022.
