1. Canada is positioned as a country that cares about gender equality. By amending laws in the name of trans rights (e.g. Bill C-16), the state purports to protect trans people from anti-trans discrimination and violence. However, trans legal scholars, such as Dean Spade, suggest that the state itself is one of the primary sources of discrimination and violence against trans people. This question asks you to respond to the following questions: In what ways does the penal state perpetrate discrimination and violence against trans people? Here you are invited to think about the various practices of surveillance, criminalization, imprisonment, and (in)access to legal redress that we discussed throughout this course. When we examine trans people’s experiences with the penal system, what can we conclude about Canada’s commitment to gender equality?

2. Write a critical reflection of Moka Dawkins’s experiences with the penal system that is grounded in course material. Your reflection should respond to the following questions: How does Moka Dawkins’s experiences of being criminalized and imprisoned reveal the intersecting, systemic racism and cisgenderism in the penal system? In what ways are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour) trans people constructed as criminal in the eyes of penal actors? How does this influence, or diminish, their status as survivors of violence?

Each answer should be 8-10 double spaced. Each essay should have an introduction (and thesis statement), body paragraphs to support your argument/answer, and a conclusion paragraph. Also please include a separate title page and reference page for both. Use APA format for in text citations and references.I have attached 5 sources and listed a web article at the top that must be used in the answers. These 6 sources are a must.
