ATTACKS, EXPLOITS AND VULNERABILITIES

An attack is the act that takes advantage of a vulnerability to compromise an asset, thus resulting in a loss. It is accompanied by a threat-agent that denies, damages or steals an organization’s information or physical asset. A vulnerability is an identified weakness in a system, where controls are not present, or not effective or have become obsolete. Below you will find a list of attacks, threat agents and vulnerabilities. For this assignment you will need to pick five (5) of the below methods. Explain the method in detail and provide suggested prevention controls. For example, if malicious code were on the list below I would first explain the topic and then as suggested controls I would state: The obvious controls are good vulnerability management (e.g., installing patches on a regular basis), up-to-date antivirus, anti-spyware, etc., but there are also policy and awareness controls that guide users’ behavior (e.g., don’t click on links in email, etc). Please make sure that your answers are detailed and well supported. You must use a minimum of three outside sources.

  1. Hoaxes with an attached virus
  2. Back doors

Description

Prompt:

Resolve three of the following dilemmas using an ethical system.

  1. I had a cousin on probation for his second DWI. No one in the family knows he is on probation. At a family gathering I saw the probationer drinking (more than one drink).
  2. A friend from high school had a boyfriend on probation. The boyfriend had violated his conditions of probation and an M.T.R.P. (Motion to Revoke Probation) was filed in his case. The girlfriend wanted me to give her confidential information out of his file.
  3. I was having dinner at a nice restaurant and the manager on duty happened to be on my caseload and offered me a free dinner and gave me basketball tickets to five games.
  4. I discovered that the applicant was an illegal alien but had a family of four with a baby who was born with a defect. His wife did not work and he was the sole provider for the family. The dilemma was that if Immigration were contacted, the individual would be deported while his family stayed with no support.
  5. Do I not collect fees from a client who is a single mother with three children because it would come out of her budget and mean she must neglect the needs of her children, or do I collect the fees and disregard the problems the client is struggling with, and alienate the client more?

Plea and Charge Bargaining Summary

Description

Prior to beginning work on this video presentation, read Plea and Charge Bargaining: Research Summary and The Unnecessary Evil of Plea Bargaining: An Unconstitutional Conditions Problem and a Not-So-Least Restrictive Alternative. Additionally, watch Due Process: Let’s Make a Deal: The Plea Bargain (Aired 12/9/12).

Well over 90% of criminal cases in the United States are concluded through a plea bargain—a significant number of those for the crime initially charged (the defendant does not plead guilty to a lesser crime than charged). As future criminal justice professionals, it is important for you to fully understand the purposes, goals, and procedures for plea agreements. In this video presentation, weigh the significance of plea bargains and the impact eliminating them would have upon the criminal justice system. Pay close attention to the limited role that judges play in plea bargains. Choose your side wisely; you will be defending your position in your video!

Prepare a two- to three-minute video presentation with detailing the following information:

  • Explain the plea bargaining process.
  • List the elements of a valid plea bargain.
  • Define the role of a judge in the plea bargaining process.
  • Create and provide an opinion on whether plea bargaining is a benefit to the United States criminal justice system and why.
    • If you are in favor of continuing plea bargaining, address arguments against its continued prevalence.
    • If you are against continuing plea bargaining, address arguments for its continued prevalence.

UMGC Code of Ethical Conduct Essay

Description

There are ethical challenges in every aspect of the criminal justice system. Administrators are responsible for setting the tone for ethical conduct in the administration and operation of their agency.

You are to assume the role of the head (Chief, Director, Warden, etc.) of a fictitious criminal justice agency; e.g., police department or sheriff’s office, local detention center (adult or juvenile) prosecutors’ office, trial court, probation agency, correctional institution, parole board, parole agency, etc.

As the head administrator, you decide it is in the best interest of your agency to have a policy that sets forth how the agency will operate in an ethical manner…. similar to a Code of Ethical Conduct

In your paper you are to describe in detail your plan to insure ethical practices in your selected agency.

How will your ethical policy be established? (Who will be involved in drafting the document? What resources will be  drawn on or references?  etc.)

How will it be communicated to the members of the agency to ensure awareness and adoption?

  • How will it be inspected to ensure compliance?
  • How will it be reinforced so that members of the agency clearly understand your seriousness?
  • NOTE: The content of your ethics policy or code is irrelevant and, but for clarification or reference purposes should not be included in this project paper. Instead, the paper should concentrate on your plan to create and Implement it.
