1. The text you have chosen to analyze in the paper. Remember you may choose from some of the main essays we have discussed in class (see list of options below).

2. A summary of the text’s main purpose (argument). Fill in this statement: “In (“Title”) (Author) argues/explores/discusses… (complete with the main ethical issue discussed in the text)”

3. A working thesis statement that includes YOUR analysis of the author’s argument. (Example: “In this paper, I will argue that/analyze how…”

4. An outline of your paper with topics for each body paragraph and any quotes you want to include to describe each element. (see sample outline handout Download sample outline handout)

5. (Optional) If you would like to write a more complete draft or even a few body paragraphs to make this draft more complete, you may do so. Remember: the more detailed your first draft, the more feedback you can receive from the instructor. (Remember that body paragraphs should follow the close reading steps of Introducing the topic, leading into a direct quote, paraphrasing the quote, and analyzing the quote.)
